Bruce Hornsby Obituary

Bruce A. Hornsby
3/18/47 –6/12/06
Lost his battle with cancer and died peacefully at his mother's home in the care and support of his family. Bruce was born in Seattle, WA and was in the first graduating class from Tyee High School. Bruce served in the U.S. Army as an Infantryman in Viet Nam from 1967 to 1969. He was awarded two Purple Hearts for battle wounds he suffered during his service in Southeast Asia. Bruce lived all his life in Seattle where he worked in several different capacities, including as a manager with the Boeing Company where he retired from after 35 years of service in 2002. Bruce continued his association with the Company as a member of the Boeing Coin Club. He also volunteered for several years at Valley Medical Center in Renton. Bruce was always a very giving person, often playing Santa Claus in costume during the holiday season for kids young and old, and as a secret and sometimes not-so-secret Santa bearing gifts and helping others throughout the year. Bruce's joy in life was bringing joy to others. Bruce enjoyed entertaining, playing cards, collecting coins and golfing. During his brief retirement years, Bruce traveled the United States and enjoyed visiting Reno, NV with his wife Linda for a little gaming entertainment. He also provided yard services for his senior family and friends in Dogwood Haven in Federal Way. Bruce is survived by Linda, his loving and devoted wife of 38 years, and his children, Paul Hornsby of Auburn, WA and Don Hornsby and his wife JoEllen who reside in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. His older sister, Teri Berg, was sadly lost to cancer in 1991. Bruce also has a younger sister, Pat Graves of Woodinville, WA and a brother Kevin Hornsby of Kent, WA. Bruce's mother, Marian Hornsby lives in Federal Way WA. His father, Howard Hornsby passed in December 2005 also from cancer. Bruce chose to stay at home throughout his extended illness but received special care from Providence Hospice of Seattle near the end. This caring and compassionate organization helped both his sister Teri and father Howard on their final journeys. The family extends their sincerest thanks to all who visited, called, wrote, prayed for, and prepared gifts of food. They suggest that if you so desire, make charitable donations to Providence Hospice of Seattle 425 Pontius Ave. North Suite 300 Seattle, WA 98109, or PanCan (Pancreatic Cancer Research) 2141 Rosecrans Ave., Suite 7000 El Segundo, CA 90245. Bruce will be interned at the Tahoma National Cemetery 18600 SE 240th St. Kent, Washington 98042-4868 following a ceremony of full military funeral honors on Friday June 30, 2006 at 2:00p.m. If you wish to attend, directions are available on the Tahoma National Cemetery website www.cem.va.gov/nchp/tahoma.htm or by phone at 425-413-9614.

Bruce was one the best things that has happened to me. What a kind and forgiving man. He will forever be missed and stay in my heart.

We didn't know Bruce well, but he took care of our lawn for a couple of years. He was always so upbeat, and we enjoyed talking to him. We know he will be missed by many.

The world is a better place because of Bruce. Some people tread lighty through our hearts and lives, some leave big, messy, wonderful footprints in our hearts and memories...he was a wonderful man.

My Uncle Bruce was an awesome person. My daughter and I are honored to have known him and loved him. He epitomizes the old saying that goes something like "When you are born, people cry tears of happiness. When you die, may the people who have known you cry tears of happiness in having known you, rather than tears of joy that you are gone". You'll be missed so much Uncle Bruce!
