We wish to express our sincere sympathies to Bruce's family on his recent passing.
Bruce was our next door neighbour out at the cottage at Grand Beach. Over the 5 years that we were neighbours, we came to enjoy our many conversations with him, sitting out on the big rock in front of his cottage. He always showed a genuine interest in our daughter Stephanie's sporting activities and in the many things my wife was planning while the 2 of them spent the summer out at the cottage.
When I'd arrive for the weekend, Bruce would always be there to greet me. A conversation usually started about a recap of the weather at the beach over the past week and then would proceed to discussions about golf, hockey or some sports that he had been watching. I thoroughly enjoyed those conversations with him.
For the first year that we owned our cottage, I never had to cut my grass. It seemed that when we got to the cottage for the weekend, Bruce had already been busy cutting the grass for us during the week. When we offered to repay him with an invite for dinner or BBQ, Bruce would thank us but politely decline, saying it was nothing on his part.
When we wouldn't get out for a few weeks, we always knew our place was looked after, as Bruce was likely out there during the week and would be watching over our cottage.
Bruce was a private person but the in moments that we had the chance to converse, we got to know a man who was humble, yet very caring and generous. He was a very special part of our family's time out at Grand Beach.
My last conversation with him was this fall when I was out raking leaves before closing the cottage down for the year. Like so many of the conversations in the past, it started with sports and then an inquiry on how Linda and Stephanie were doing and if they were out with me. We wished each other well and looked forward to seeing each other in the coming cottage season.
Bruce, the coming cottage season won't be the same without you. We'll miss seeing the big blue Caddy sitting in the yard and we'll miss the conversations about sports while sitting on the big rock. Most of all, we will miss being greeted by you when we arrive.
Rest in peace good friend...
