Charles "Sonny" Andrews Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 26, 2014.
SHREVEPORT, LA – Celebrating the life of Charles H. (Sonny) Andrews II who was born February 7, 1929, in San Antonio, TX, to Charles H. Andrews and Lillian Glass Andrews Sweeny. Sonny died November 25, 2014, after losing his battle with cancer at Grace Home in Shreveport. Sonny attended Jefferson Military Academy and after graduation joined the US Navy where he served as a Fire Controlman from 1948 to 1952 on the Destroyer USS Agerholm (826) during the Korean War and also played on the Navy Championship Softball team. Sonny married his wife, Bobbie Jean Stevens Andrews, on February 17, 1956. He donated most of his time working as an Auxiliary Police Officer with the Shreveport Police Department and also as a Caddo Parish Reserve Deputy until going to work as a University Police Officer with LSUS Medical Center where he retired as a Sergeant. After retiring Sonny enjoyed wood working, spending time with his great-grandchildren, and was an avid LSU fan until his illness prevented him from continuing with his passions.

Sonny was preceded in death by his mother, father, and most of his friends. He is survived in death by his wife Bobbie of 58 years; his daughter, Becky Harbour and husband Danny of Emmet, AR; his son, Chuck Andrews and wife Leslie of Haughton, LA; three grandchildren, Crystal Andrews McKenna and husband Steve, Megan Andrews, and Cody Andrews; five great-grandchildren, Devin McKenna, Drew McKenna, Cameron Andrews, Grayson Billedeaux, and Kristie Andrews; along with two step great-grandchildren, Jaycelyn Billedeaux and Alayna Perdue.

The family would like to thank all the medical staff of Christus Schumpert, Christus Schumpert Cancer Center, and Grace Home for their continued care and support.

Graveside services will be held at Centuries Memorial Park, 8801 Mansfield Rd., Shreveport, LA at 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 1, 2014, officiated by Tim Barnes, of St. Luke's Methodist Church.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Charles H. (Sonny) Andrews, II our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Sonny. And to Sonny it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during the Korean War while serving in the U.S. Navy. Sonny, we commend you for your honorable service. You are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. You were a true friend. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,261 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion and the 233 veterans of VFW Post 2238 in Shreveport, Louisiana, we extend our sympathies and our condolences to Sonny's family and loved ones.

I know you are in a better place and you are resting peacefully now. I will miss you and love you always.

I am going to miss you Daddy. One of his favorite highlights of the year was when LSU and Arkansas played for the Boot. We would discuss the game and wish each other the best. I made sure he had plenty of Razorbacks in his house along with his Tigers. Mom and I will carry on the tradition. Love you Daddy.
