Bud Quintana Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 4, 2015.
Dr. Bud Edward Quintana, Ph.D

Dr. Bud Edward Quintana, Ph.D passed away on November 28, 2015, at Ohio State University Medical Center, surrounded by his family and close friends, the result of a tragic accident while hiking.

Bud was born in Hawthorne, California on April 1, 1942. He was 73 years old, the oldest of three sons.

Bud led a colorful and accomplished life. He grew up in southern California amongst a tight-knit clan of cousins, aunts and uncles, grandparents and friends. He surfed, ran track, and his dad taught him to work on cars which led to a life-long love affair with cars -the faster the better. He was vice president of South High school in Torrance, class of 1960. He was introduced to the world of medicine at his first job as an Orderly at the newly opened Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance, while he went to school. He graduated from CSULB and got his Ph.D from University of California (1970). He attended medical school at University of Health Sciences in Medicine (DO), Iowa, and completed his training in general and thoracic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in 1975. He settled in Ohio, and would visit his family and friends back in California.

He worked much of his career in trauma and emergency care medicine, saving countless lives, and also taught medical students and residents at several universities, which he so enjoyed.

Bud worked hard and played hard. He cruised the highways of America on motorcycles, and raced cars, and collected them too. He loved music and played piano, especially the blues; and actually supported himself during medical school by playing piano in bars. He travelled, water and snow skied, studied karate and kick-boxing, and was basically a health and fitness buff. He had a few close calls along the way. Bud was restless, curious and a voracious reader; when he wanted to learn something, he would research it endlessly. Bud kept up life-long friendships all over the country.

But, Bud also had his struggles with alcohol and other addictions at times, which caused turbulence in his life. He was an AA member for decades, as mentee and mentor, and these friendships were very important to his health and balance.

Not one to retire, Bud most recently worked as director of the Suboxone program, laser treatment and out-patient surgery at Community Health Center, and was on faculty at NEOMED in Summa Health System's residency program for family physicians, and was awarded Teacher of the Year in 2008.

On October 20th, he took his board exam in addiction medicine.

Bud was preceded in death by father, Henry George Quintana and mother, June Grace Streur. He is survived by daughter, Kara (Roger Nagaoka) of San Pedro, Calif.; son, Michael of Carson, Calif., (Karen Luceyk Nardin); grandchildren, Erik of Chesapeake, Va., Kevin and Allison of San Pedro, Calif.; brothers, Jack Quintana of Bishop, Calif., Thomas Quintana of Hawthorne, Calif.

Bud's family wishes to thank first responder officer Ryan Swigart of Hocking State Park and Hocking Valley Community Hospital for their diligent care, the good Samaritans who jumped in, and the medical and pastoral staff at Ohio State University Medical Center who were so attentive to the family through the ordeal, Jim Cross, a father-like friend who was very dear to Bud. And last, Laura Farris his beautiful fianceé. The couple were hiking along the trail on Thanksgiving day after dinner, when Bud stumbled, possibly on a tree root, headfirst into a tree, suffering major neck and spinal injury, his adventurous, ever-changing life, ending in her arms. Their several years together were among the happiest and most peaceful of his life.

Funeral service will be held at St. Michael Catholic Church, 3430 St. Michael Drive NW, Canton Ohio, Monday, Dec. 7. Viewing Visitation 2 to 4 p.m., service 4 to 5:30, light reception immediately following in the hall.

Bud was a long-time supporter of St. Jude and credited the Betty Ford Center for saving his life. In lieu of flowers please, donations can be made to Hazelden Betty Ford Clinic www.hazeldenbettyford.org and St Jude Children's Hospital, www.stjude.org. Swigart-Easterling, 330-854-2356

I was a close friend of Bud's when he was a residnt at Lancaster Osteopathic Hospital,PA in 1976. He was very friendly and made everyone feel important in his life. I am so sorry for your loss. He would always play the piano at any gathering when one was available. Many nights I would listen to him play in his Loving room. His favorite song at that time was "On a Clear Day". I know he will be missed by all the people he touched in his life.

I am in tears reading so many kind remembrances! So very proud of my dad learning a little more all the time of all the lives he impacted. Let's all do our part, and help other's, each in our own way. Remember, all of us are afflicted in one way or another, all of us are healers!

As I walked in his office this morning the atmosphere was very different, something just didn't feel right it was at that time I was told he was no longer around, at that point I took a very deep breath and my mind flashed immediately back to my first meeting of one amazing Dr. He has helped keep me on the right path and most definitely is the most caring, considerate and passionate human being I've been in contact with. Regardless of your past situation or problems he welcomed those who really wanted a change with open arms. He is one of very few on this earth that looks past all the darkness to seek the light so many desperately have been searching for. He is an amazing person and hands down the best doctor myself and many other have ever been in contact with. My deepest condolences go to all of his family and friends, just know you are very to lucky to have met such an amazing person such as Dr. Q, he has helped many make very hard life changing decisions and done it successfully. He is a very wonderful person, he will forever be in the hearts of myself and my family as he has helped me keep alive a marriage I have so desperately tried to save and helped me become a much better father as well as person. He is an amazing person at heart. Thank you to all that have shared their kind experiences. Most of all, thank you very much to Dr. Q for being such an understanding and accepting person. He saved many lives on this earth, he and his family have my upmost respect. Much love to you all.
- Heaven just received another wonderful angel to watch over all those that need guidance.

I want to give my condolences to Dr Quintana's family. I was a patient of his. My last appointment I thanked him for everything he has done to help me. He told me I was doing a good job. When I thanked him for everything it was because he always smiled, he always made sure that I stayed on track. I wouldn't be where I am now if it wasn't for his help. Two years ago my life was completely ruined and if it wasn't for doctors like Dr. Q then I honestly don't know where I would be. Because of caring people like him, I wouldn't be the mom that I am now and I wouldn't have finally fulfilled my dream of going to college. Thank you Dr. Quintana, you really will be truly missed.

So sad to hear the news of such a great professional and friend. I had much respect for this man as he was the one who tried so hard to save my father's untimely death, as he did with so many others. I will always remember our last conversation this past summer. Walking at a park in Florida and out of the blue a phone call from "Q" He will be missed.
Sincere condolences to Laura and the family.

I was so startled and sorry to learn that my cousin Bud has died. I remember so many fun times as kids we had at our family reunions. I teared up as I read his obituary and some of the condolence comments left on this website. I felt proud that Bud has helped so many others. And I felt glad that he had lived such an adventurous life. And I was especially glad to read that my cousin's last years were among his happiest and peaceful.

My deepest sympathy to Dr. Quintana's family. I had the pleasure of working with him for 18 years at BCH. He was always very kind to the staff and his patients.
Dr. Quintana saved my life when I had pneumonia. I remember opening my eyes in I.C.U., (more than once) to see him in my room.
Very sad to say goodbye to such a great man.

Dr. Quintana RIP

I am very sad to hear of Dr. Quintana's passing. I worked with him in the ER at Barberton Citizens Hospital for about 25yrs (during his times with different Physician's Groups). I enjoyed listening to his stories and the things he had done in his life. He was a very kind person. He would call in occasionally to see how we were doing, catch up on things and say our goodbyes. I am so sorry for your loss. He will be missed by many!!! Huggs, Dottie

I have only known Dr. Q for about 8 months now. When I heard the news of his passing I felt terrible. He was one of the most compassionate and kind doctors I have ever met. Dealing with a chronic illness led me to dependence on prescription pain medication. When I entered the Suboxone program I was pretty desperate for help. Dr. Q not only treated me as a patient but he reached out to me with compassion and concern and in some ways was a friend. He helped me through one of the most difficult points in my life. His family can rest assured that Dr. Q despite his own struggles with addiction is leaving a legacy of going above and beyond the call of duty as a physician and as a human being. He is truly missed. May God Bless you!
