Funeral service to celebrate the life of Kernel "Buddy" King, 81, Davenport will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at New Life Baptist Church, Davenport. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home. There will be additional visitation at church on Tuesday prior to services from 9:30 a.m. until 10:20 a.m. Burial will take place in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery where the American Legion Post #26 will conduct military graveside services. Buddy passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at Select Specialty Hospital, Davenport Kernel King was born December 1, 1929 in Whitesburg, Kentucky, one of 14 children born to W. L. and Stella (Greer) King. Buddy proudly served our country in U.S. Army during the Korean War. He united in marriage to the love of his life, Doris Phillips on January 12, 1953 in Whitesburg, Kentucky. Buddy retired from Oscar Mayer with over 22 years of service, he had worked the past 25 years shuttling vehicles for Lujacks Auto Plaza. Buddy enjoyed his Oldsmobile and spending time outdoors, but his greatest joy in life came from spending time with his wife and family, especially his grandchildren. Memorials may be made in Buddy's name to Select Specialty Hospital, Davenport. Those left to honor his memory include his wife of over 58 years, Doris, and their children; two daughters, Carolene (Don) Quick, and Faye (Arturo) Infante, all of Davenport; his son, Buddy (Lanette) King, Cincinnati, OH and son, Tim (Linda) Tucker, Cincinnati, OH; 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild; five sisters, Margaret Ivy, Little Rock, AR, Mary (Joseph) Ambrose, Lake City, FL, Maria Sexton, Lincoln Park, MI, Ruth Bjornholm, Zepher Hills, FL, and Jean Vallus, Gaylord, MI as well as numerous loving nieces and nephews and all the Phillips in-laws. His parents, two infant children, five sisters, four brothers and a special nephew Donald Ray Kiser, who shall be inurned with Buddy, preceded him in death.
