Byrnes FLEUTY Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal on Jun. 11, 2014.
FLEUTY, Dr. R. Byrnes
Byrnes passed away peacefully at home on June 7, 2014 after a short battle with cancer.
He is survived by Crystal, his wife of 55 years; daughters Crystal (Vincent) Isola of San Jose, CA, Karen (Gordon) Allarie of Edmonton, Kirsten of Inuvik, NWT; son James (Tania) of Flin Flon MB; and nine grandchildren Morgan, Jaimie, Emma, Kari, Maya, Carlo, Kent, Christie and Sarah. His son Robbie predeceased him shortly after birth.
Byrnes was born in Windsor, ON in 1931. He attended the fountainhead of chiropractic at the Palmer School in Iowa where he received his certification as a DC. After a brief stint as a minor league professional football player near Chicago, he came to Edmonton to start the first 25 years of a thriving chiropractic practice. The family moved to Northern California in 1979. He practiced there for 4 more years before returning to Edmonton for 6 more years prior to retiring. During his long career, he received many accolades, such as 'Fellow in the Palmer Academy of Chiropractic' for contributions to the growth of chiropractic education. Only one other Canadian has received this award. He also held executive positions in the Alberta Chiropractic Association.
His avocations included building and flying private planes, sailing his boat, Silva Dollar, and Airstream vacationing across Canada, USA, Mexico, even leading an Airstream expedition in Alaska. He received an award in 1973 from the Intl. Experimental Aircraft Assoc. for building and racing a bi-plane. He participated with Crystal for years as a soloist in the Civic Light Opera and charter member of the Grand Opera Company in Edmonton.
An avid skier, he led growth of the Edmonton Ski Club as president and wrote a ski column for The Journal. He had a passionate love of sports cars, owning at various times, 2 Rolls Royce Phantoms, Austin Healey 3000, an MG and a vintage Jaguar.
Byrnes was a fearless adventurer. He led the extended family west every summer to the beloved family compound overlooking Taylor Bay on Gabriola Island off Nanaimo. His passion for adventure, challenges and family energized everyone around him. He will be missed but the love he shared will be remembered forever.
Memorial Services will be held at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, 11111- 57 Avenue at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 14, 2014. Donations can be made in his name to the Alberta Aviation Museum-Edmonton.

Hi Crystal, just had a call from my son Daryl from Gabriola saying that he saw you today at the market and he informed me of the death of Byrnes. So sorry to hear this news; Bobbi and I would like to extend our condolences to you and your family. You and Byrnes have provided many good memories of Palm Desert (Emerald) which we have shared many times with our friends. I am so glad we crossed paths and that I got to hear many stories from Byrnes on the experiences you shared together. I hope you are able to pickup this message , I'm using the business card Byrnes passed to me a couple of years ago. I know the likelihood of us crossing paths again are slim however one never knows. Bobbi and I wish you well as the future unfolds for you. Hugh McCullough, Victoria BC

Dear Crystal and Family
Our sincerest sympathy for your loss. Byrnes will be greatly missed at Weary Wireliners luncheons. We have both lost our life mates and there is one thing we have found: that they are always with us, ready to be brought to mind and to heart, always there, just a little in the background In a way, they have become part of us, and that we cannot lose.

Crystal and family,
We were saddened to hear of Byrnes' passing. He was a very fortunate man. He lived an adventurous life with a loving family. I wish I could ease some of your pain but that's a journey you will each have to travel at your own pace. Love to you all.

Aunt Bubsie and family,
There are many fond memories
that will never go away. They started in 1956 with our family trip to Jasper, weekends in the Kootenay Plains, Rochester, Gabriolla and many in between. He will be missed but one would not wish Uncle Byrnes back to suffer again. Love to all the family,

Dear Crystal:
I was sad but I was reminded of so many good times we had during ski club days. I broke my pelvis getting off the chair lift at Marmot on the 4th of April and still cannot sit or I would be joining you in remembering a good friend on the 14th. Know of my prayers for all of you.
Love

Dearest Crystal and family, we send you our deepest heartfelt sympathy.
You and Byrnes were such an important part of our lives for so many years as we watched your family grow.
Byrnes was truly one of a kind with so many interests and accomplishments. Unfortunately he was not able to make his annual visit to Gabriola, his paradise island, but when you and the family are there his spirit will be walking along the shore.
With love always
