Cameron Jones Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 9, 2023.

On Saturday, February 4, 2023, our beloved Cameron “Cam” Marcel Jones was called from this earthly life to be with the Lord.

Cam, as his loved ones called him affectionately, was born September 15, 1993 to Angela L. Jones and Michael H. Barber Jr., in Roanoke, Virginia.

Cam was a proud member of the graduating class of 2011 from Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke, VA. While at Patrick Henry, Cam excelled as a leader on the varsity basketball team which paved his way to Massanutten Military Prep and Brunswick Community College to advance his academics and basketball career. During his time at Brunswick Community College, Cam was named an All American and earned many other accolades including his Associates Degree. After many Division 1 offers, Cam chose to attend Radford University, where he earned a full scholarship to continue his basketball career at the highest level for two seasons. Cam’s love for the Roanoke community made attending Radford an easy choice - he was able to stay close to his loved ones while advancing his career in a sport he loved. Unbeknownst to him at the time, this is also where he would meet his long-term girlfriend, MaKayla. During his time at Radford, Cam was a standout student-athlete who cared deeply about his academics, teammates, and community. Cam’s drive to succeed manifested passionately through his feats on the basketball court and in the classroom while leading his team to big wins and earning a Bachelor of Arts in Communications.

This drive and passion prevalent in Cam enabled him to continue his basketball career on the professional level after college. In 2016-2017, he joined the Svendborg Rabbits in Denmark and quickly became a key player for the team. After completing his first professional season, Cam earned another opportunity to play professionally, this time for the GBA Lions in Czech Republic. Cam followed up his international basketball career by playing with the ABA league for teams such as the Roanoke Rising Stars, Richmond Elite, and the Fredericksburg Grizzlies. On and off the court Cam made memorable impressions on his teammates, coaching staff, and fans that has left a lasting legacy for years to come.

Life after basketball led Cam to develop his newest passion, teaching. Cam was a devoted teacher for Henrico County Public Schools. Though starting his career in elementary school, he made his way to middle school where he truly found his place. Much like his other passions, Cam went above and beyond by also coaching boys basketball and teaching summer school. Cam was able to provide students with a space where they felt supported and excited about education, something that many had never experienced before. He developed meaningful relationships with his students, their families, and his colleagues which will continue to impact their minds and hearts the rest of their lives.

Perhaps Cam’s biggest accomplishment though, was his daughter Kehlani, to whom he gifted a bright smile, contagious laugh, and an optimistic attitude. He adored Kehlani and leaves her with many loved ones who will continue to guide her, love her, and teach her about the man her father was. Of all the things Cam was, at his core he was a family man - a family man that would do anything to support those he loved. Cam has never met a stranger, and anyone who was fortunate enough to meet him now lives a better life for it.

Cam is preceded in death by his maternal great grandfather, Charles E. Jones.

Cam is survived by his daughter, Kehlani Kier, his parents Angela L. Jones and Michael H. Barber, brother Christopher Jones, devoted partner MaKayla Foley, maternal grandparents Cecilia Saunders and Larry Jones Sr., paternal grandparents Michael H. Barber Sr. and Icaress Gardner, maternal great grandparents Lynn and Dorothy Arrington and Christine Jones. He also leaves a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.

Cam will be missed by many and loved by all.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 11, 2023, 11:00 am at Pilgrim Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Jones was my favorite teacher. I’ve known him for 3 years. We were at Varina elementary school for 2 years. When I started 6th grade my current school year, I was surprised and very happy when I found out he was my English teacher. I’m really sad that I will not see him again and it’s very hard going to his classroom. I know he is heaven with God because he was a good man that loved his students. I going to miss you Mr. Jones and to your family I’m sorry for your loss.

I knew "Mr. Jones," as the 6th graders referred to him with respect and affection, while tutoring in his middle school English classroom for 6 months in 2022. I learned much about his passions for basketball, his daughter, and his family. Always bright-faced and smiling, Mr. Jones was a spark for every situation. I remember most his love and care for the children others seem to have forgotten about or written off. He recognized the inherent goodness in each child and tried in his own inimitable way to encourage each student to reach his or her potential.

With great pride and love, he shared memories of a special dinner with his mother on Mother's Day, 2022. May these and other precious memories of Mr. Jones bring you peace, solace. and comfort in the days ahead. He was a great young man, and he will be missed.

My heart is so sad upon hearing of the passing of this wonderful young man. I worked with his Mom and got to meet him when he visited her at work and kept up with him through her loving and proud reports thereafter. Praying wholeheartedly for comfort and strength for Angie, Chris and the family and friends who will cherish his life lived and mourn his absence. RIP Cam.

Cam was a ray of sunshine who lit up any room with his presence. Cam was a absolute JOY to his mom Angie, his daughter Kehlani whom he adored
and his bonded brother Christopher, and his very close family for whom he loved & touch affectionately who sorely miss him deeply.

Cam leaves behind an amazingly profound legacy through the eyes of his family, no doubt; the many lives
