Cameron Weiss Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 12, 2023.
Cameron Weiss, 37, of Del Mar, CA, passed away on September 10, 2023 after a long and brave battle with cancer.

Born at Mercy Hospital in San Diego on September 29,1985, Weiss was a fan of sports from a very young age. A devoted baseball and football fan, he spent his childhood at Qualcomm Stadium, and later Petco Park, with his dad, Marc, and younger brother, Daniel, watching his favorite players, Tony Gwynn and Junior Seau.

As a child, Cameron spent countless hours after school playing his own version of "home run derby" in the backyard with his younger brother, as their baby sister, Alexandra, cheered them on. On the field, he played catcher as part of Del Mar Little League, and later was the starting linebacker on his high school football team at La Jolla Country Day.

After receiving his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Southern California, and his law degree from the University of San Diego, Cameron parlayed his passion for sports into a groundbreaking career. His first role was with the Dodgers, where former Dodgers' director of human resources Joe Walsh described him as "ambitious." "You could tell [he wasn't] going to stick around and answer phones - but [he] had an uncanny ability as [a] young [guy] to empathize with the other side of the desk," said Walsh about Weiss in a 2014 article in the New York Times. That empathy - and inexhaustible drive - led Weiss to start his own company, Empire Athletes, in 2012. As founder and a young agent, Weiss got his big break in the form of NFL player, Michael Sam. Having scouted him as a promising college athlete, Cameron helped Sam ink his deal with the St. Louis Rams and supported him as Sam came out as the first openly gay player drafted by the NFL. During the 2014 draft, when ESPN broadcast a kiss between Sam and his-then boyfriend, Cameron championed his client, and spoke out against homophobic reactions from on and off the field.

In 2019, Cameron founded Dynamic Sports Group, where as president, he represented both baseball and football clients, negotiating over a quarter billion dollars in client contracts throughout his career. Known for his eye for talent and his commitment to his players, Cameron spotted the Chargers' now star running back Austin Ekeler right out of college, and helped him sign as a free agent with the team. In 2020, he negotiated a four-year, $24.5 million dollar deal on Ekeler's behalf.

As an agent, Cameron was unwavering in his support for his clients, and his commitment to them went well beyond just their professional careers. "Only one agent ever reached out to me coming out of college," wrote Ekeler on an Instagram tribute for Cameron. "Since then you've been like a brother to me. You will always live on in my story."

Through it all, Cameron remained an avid fan, oftentimes watching multiple games simultaneously across four different TV screens.

In his personal life, Cameron was known for his generosity, his kindness, his sense of humor, and his never-ending luck at a blackjack table. Living in Summerlin, NV, a suburb near Las Vegas, he enjoyed playing golf at Red Rock Country Club.

A dedicated friend, Cameron created lifelong relationships with everyone he met. When he married his beloved wife, Katherine, he had eleven groomsmen, most of whom he'd known since middle school, and all of whom traveled to Maui from across the country for the event. He counted people he met from La Jolla Country Day, USC, and law school among his best friends. He met Katherine while attending USC, and together, they traveled the world, including his personal favorite, Japan, and spent every winter in Maui. They rescued two dogs, Daisy, whom they affectionately called "Daisybear," and Rocket, known in their family as "Rocky Boy."

A dedicated son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and recently, uncle, Cameron was always at the center of his large extended family. Whether he was watching football with his Papa Myles, traveling with his grandparents, Iris and Matt, or spending time with his nephew, Caleb, whom he adored, Cameron cherished his time with his family. The eldest of three siblings, he was incredibly close to his brother and sister. As children, Cameron and Daniel were inseparable and loved to play sports and video games together. As adults, they maintained their closeness and regularly attended sporting events together. Cameron celebrated the birth of his nephew as if it was his own child, and touted Caleb's birth as the best thing to ever happen to his family.

A film enthusiast, Cameron particularly enjoyed watching horror films with his sister, who he called "Al Bop." He and Alexandra also shared a special bond over music, often sending each other songs they were listening to throughout the day. He was fiercely protective over her from the time they were children, until his final days. Cameron had the initials M, S, C, D, A for Marc, Stefanie, Cameron, Daniel, and Alexandra tattooed on his wrist, showing his devotion and love for his immediate family. Cameron was also close with his dad's wife, Maggie, and his 9-year-old sister, Mila, who he enjoyed swimming and spending time with.

His mother, Stefanie, was Cameron's guardian angel. Cameron was by her side when she passed away when he was only 21. Stefanie always referred to Cameron as "her special" and Lauryn Hill's song "Too Good To Be True," always reminded her of Cameron. Following her death, Cameron dedicated his time and money to research for ovarian cancer, and continued to honor his mother's legacy.

Cameron fought relentlessly following his cancer diagnosis in 2022. He was determined, and courageously fought his diagnosis with strength and grace, while always maintaining his kindness and his sense of humor. In the hospital, he would thank every nurse and doctor. He was considerate and loving to all of those around him until the very end.

Cameron was predeceased by his beloved mother, Stefanie, his aunt, Tamara, and both of his great grandmothers, "G.G." Rose Kahan, and "Nana" Birdie Leeds. He is survived by his wife, Katherine, his father, Marc, his brother, Daniel, his sister, Alexandra, his nephew Caleb, and his two dogs, Daisy and Rocky, along with all of his extended family and so many friends who adored him.

Cameron sat in a row behind me in one of the classes we shared in law school. Once, he caught me looking up opera tickets instead of paying attention to the lecture. After class, he asked me about it - and when I said I've never been to the opera, but always wanted to see a live performance, he grinned and said, "I can get you in." A man of his word, he took me to a showing of 'La Traviata' just a few days later. There, I had the pleasure of meeting Cameron's grandparents and saw for the first time just how close Cameron and his family were. It was a magical evening - and solidified my love of opera. I have thought of Cameron before every other performance I attended in the years since and have never stopped being grateful for the time we shared together. He was a true friend - boisterous, generous, and infinitely kind. I am glad to have walked the earth at the same time as him.

I met Cameron through one of his fraternity brothers and we played in a fantasy football league together for several seasons.

Through this league, I got to the chance to get to know Cameron and his overall generosity, competitiveness, and genuine love for people.

Cameron was always excited to chat with everyone in the league, make jokes, and always invited everyone to come visit him in Vegas.

Cameron, it was an honor knowing you!
