TUSCALOOSA - Camille Wright Cook, age 93, born April 14, 1924, died at home on Tuesday, February 20, 2018. A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in Tuscaloosa, Alabama at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 23, followed by a reception at the church.
Mrs. Cook was born in Tuscaloosa, the daughter of Judge Reuben Hall Wright and Camille Searcy Wright. She received her BA degree from The University of Alabama in 1944 and her law degree from the UA School of Law in 1947.
She was an assistant professor at Auburn University from 1948-68. She joined the faculty of The University of Alabama School of Law in 1968 and was a Professor of Law from 1978-93. At the UA School of Law, she served many roles, including Assistant Dean and Director of Continuing Legal Education. She received the Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award in 1990. Her teaching interests included family law, women and the law, contracts, sex discrimination, and children's rights. Her many publications reflected these interests. Before retiring in 1993, she served as the John S. Stone Professor of Law.
She held several offices within the law school, among them admissions chairman and chair of the dean search committee. She was also involved with the law school curriculum and scholarships. Additionally, from 1983-85, she was the Assistant Academic Vice-President of The University of Alabama.
Mrs. Cook was a member of both the county and state bar associations, the American Bar Association, and the American Law Institute. Among her many honors was membership on the board of trustees of the Farrah Law Society and board of directors of the Law School Foundation. She also served on the Smithsonian Council of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C.
She always had the belief that town and gown should work closely together. She worked actively in each area. Among her numerous civic activities were memberships on the boards of directors of the First National Bank (AmSouth/Regions) and Hospice of West Alabama. She was also a member of the Christ Episcopal Church vestry. Her additional interests included Tuscaloosa Preservation Society, Tuscaloosa County Red Cross, Caring Days, University Club board of governors and numerous social and study groups.
Mrs. Cook's family includes children, Sydney Cook (Martha), Reuben Cook (Katy), Cade Cook and Camille Ashley (Shapard); grandchildren, Anne-Laura Cook, George Cook (Elisabeth), Hamilton Cook, Cammie Cook, Camille Ashley and John Ashley; great-grandchild, Tinsley Cook; and brother, George Searcy Wright.
She was predeceased by her infant daughter, Cammie Cook.
The family wishes to acknowledge the excellent care provided by Teresa Ragsdale, Marietta Harris, Vicki Bradley, Janice McCrary, Ann Lake and Hospice of West Alabama.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Camille Wright Cook Endowed Scholarship (University of Alabama School of Law, Box 870382, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487), Christ Episcopal Church Foundation (605 Lurleen B Wallace Blvd N, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401), or an organization of the donor's choice.
