Capt. Will Rogers III Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 16, 2025.
Capt. Will C. Rogers III, USN (Ret.), a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law, friend, and decorated U.S. Naval officer, passed away at his home on June 30, 2025, at the age of 86.

Born on December 13, 1938, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Vonnabeth Harrell and Dr. Will C. Rogers, Jr., Will grew up in San Antonio, where he and his younger brother, Richard Harrell "Dick" Rogers, filled their days with laughter and adventure. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1957 and attended Baylor University, earning his bachelor's degree in 1962. Afterward, he taught high school in San Antonio and later earned a master's degree in history from Trinity University-a subject he remained passionate about throughout his life.

Commissioned as a U.S. Naval officer in 1965, Will served his country with honor for 26 years, rising to the rank of captain. His career included both sea and shore assignments, with tours aboard the USS Independence, Vreeland, George K. MacKenzie, and David R. Ray. He also commanded the USS Exploit, Cushing, and Vincennes. Will was known not only for his leadership but for the deep respect and camaraderie he fostered among his crews - perhaps none more enduring than with those who served under his command aboard the Vincennes, 'Team 49'. His military decorations include the Legion of Merit, two Meritorious Service Medals, three Navy Commendation Medals with Combat "V," two Combat Action Ribbons, and the Humanitarian Service Medal.

While at Baylor, Will met Sharon Loomis, who would become his wife, confidante, and partner in every sense. Their marriage lasted 60 years and was marked by love, resilience, and a shared spirit of adventure. During the early years of Will's Navy career, the couple moved frequently - from Newport, RI, to Long Beach, CA; Yokosuka, Japan; Norfolk, VA; and Washington, D.C. - before settling in San Diego, CA. Aside from additional year-long assignments in Newport and D.C., and extended deployments at sea, San Diego remained their home for nearly five decades.

After retiring from the Navy, Will worked in management roles at Orincon and later DDL Omni. He also pursued his love of aviation, becoming a certified flight instructor and spending countless hours in the air with friends. A life-long car enthusiast, he could often be found under the hood or behind the wheel of his prized Austin Healey, frequently joined by his son for memorable drives up the California coast.

Will and Sharon were avid travelers. From road trips across the U.S. to cruises abroad, they cherished each journey - often joined by close friends and family. Will had a deep appreciation for movies, history, a good book, and a hearty meal. He was a natural storyteller, and those who knew him remember his sharp wit and easy laugh.

More than anything, Will was proud of the life he built with Sharon and of their family. Their only child, Will IV-whom he called Bill-was born in Japan during Will's service in Vietnam. Their bond was a special one, and they remained closely connected wherever life took them. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law; two beloved granddaughters; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law; a niece and nephews and their families; and many dear friends. Sharon preceded him in death in August 2024.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heifer International or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, two of Will's favorite charities.
