Captain John Aven "Johnny" Carroll Jr., age 81, passed away on September 6, 2025 in Naples Florida. Born on February 1, 1944 in East Point. Georgia, John lived a life defined by passion for aviation, dedication to his craft, and a deep commitment to thise around him.

John graduated from Headland High School in East Point, Georgia. After two years pre-med studies he discoverer that his true calling lay elsewhere and went to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Aviation Management from Auburn University in Alabama. This decision marked the beginning of a remarkable career that would span decades and leave an indelible mark on the aviation community.

He retired from Delta/Southern Airlines in 2004 following a series of mergers that shaped the airline industry. Over the course of of his flying career, John logged over 30,000 flight hours-a testament to both his skill and unwavering dedication. His expertise extended far beyond the cockpit; he also retired from Flight Safety International and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA),where he contributed significantly to aviation training and safety.

John held multi- and single-engine pilot licenses and was a certified ground school instructor. In addition to his piloting credentials, he maintained an FAA Airframe and Powerplant mechanical license with inspection authorization -an achievement reflecting his comprehensive knowledge of aircraft systems and maintenance.

Known for his motto "FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION", John approached every challenge with determination and precision. He was not only respected for his technical abilities but also admired for his integrity, generosity, and devotion to others.

Outside of aviation, he had a wide range of interests. He was passionate about flying vintage aircraft (especially his home built Cessna -195) as well as restoring vintage cars and motorcycles.

John is survived by his beloved wife Judy Carroll; stepson Kevin Nation; and close companion Abby. He is preceded in death by his parents, John Aven Carroll Sr. and Elsie E. (Bryant) Carroll.

Those who knew Johnny will remember him not only for his celebrated career but also for his the warmth of his friendship and willingness to help others. His prescience brought light into many lives, and one could only imagine what he might do or say next-always surprising, always sincere.

His memory will forever live on in those who knew and loved him.

A Celebration of Life will be held on November 1, 2025 at Hogjowl Airport, 25515 Highway 157, Cloudland, GA. You can fly-in, drive-in or walk-in. Bring your memories and laughter. RSVP by text or message (404)626-6226. If unable to attend please feel free to text or message a memory of John.
