Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 16 to Apr. 17, 2020.
Cara Ann Savage Bonawitz, M.D., passed away Saturday, March 28, 2020, at her home in Richardson, Texas. She was born in Erie, Pa., on January 15, 1968.

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our loved one. Although we were not able to say goodbye, your friends and family are beyond proud of all your accomplishments and especially your loving soul. No one can take away the memories of this full of life, intelligent, and beautiful woman. Fly on sweet angel.

Cara graduated from Mercyhurst Prep and was a foreign exchange student in Germany her junior year. Playing soccer in Germany only propelled her dominance and offensive execution on the soccer field. She attended Rochester University where she earned an undergraduate degree in Pre-Med. Cara played soccer for the University of Rochester women's team. The team won the 1987 NCAA Division III Championship, only losing one game that season. Cara then attended Penn State College of Medicine and completed her residency in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of North Carolina, finally becoming an Interventional Radiologist. She practiced at various locations in Virginia, Indiana and Texas over 20 years.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Cynthia Savage; and father, Greg Savage.

Cara is survived by her stepfather, Everett McAninch; aunts, Lynda Miller (David), Rhonda Lewis (Vern), and Maria Savage (Jeff); uncle, Rick Rudenski (Belinda); cousins, Rhonda Truitt (Stephan Terrill), William Truitt (Susan), and Bethe Carlson (Jonathan); and her beloved Greyhounds, Zuma and Zane.

Burial arrangements will be handled by Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., 2607 Buffalo Road. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Greyhounds Unlimited www.greyhoundsunlimited.org. A celebration of Cara's life will be held when family and friends are able to gather together again.

I met Cara through an online dating application over a year ago. Our first meeting was on Super Bowl Sunday. We met at her home and she welcomed me by cooking a steak with multiple sides. Instantly we hit it off. We engaged in extremely long conversations over politics. She was the first person I met that out spoke me on the phone. I enjoyed listening to her love of Radiology and helping those who needing her medical specialty. I herd the news this morning on my way to work when the radio said her name. I immediately new the news of her death was absolutely horrific, and a pain shot through my heart. Such a sweet young lady who had so much to offer taken from all of us. Your spirit will live on!!

My condolences to the friends, family and colleagues of Dr. Bonawitz. I was sadden to her of her passing but I will always treasure those amazing moments I had working with her. I had the pleasure of working with her in Laredo,TX. I remember discussing plane rides (the flights were always delayed or cancelled due to weather) to dinner options. I will always be grateful for her reaching out to me during a difficult time in my life. She always took the time to make sure others were well. We all loved her amazing attitude. The staff and physicians always wanted to work with her. Dr. Bonawitz will truly be missed but not forgotten. Sending healing prayers and sharing in your sadness as we remember her.

Dr. Bonawitz was so funny and beautiful. It was a pleasure working with her in Norfolk, VA at Sentara Leigh Hospital. She let me select an option on her BMW that she was ordering online. I was so impressed because I never knew people ordered cars online. I'm glad she crossed my path. Blessings to her loved ones.

I worked with Cara in Virginia and remember how much she loved and adored her greyhounds, and what an advocate she was of the rescue program. I remember how tenacious she was, very strong and determined. She also had a very sweet and loving side. I never experienced her looking down on anyone and often invited us over for a girls night. I will remember fondly our karaoke battle at one of our many Christmas parties. She was a lot of fun and full of life. She will be missed. ❤
