Carl Handfield Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 19 to Aug. 20, 2014.
Carl Handfield December 12, 1965 - August 8, 2014 It is with great sadness that our son Carl died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 48. Carl lived in Vancouver and often visited his parents in Calgary. His happy personality will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Carl lived a brief but exciting life, with many travels to Southeast Asia, Central America, and Europe. He excelled in skiing, horsemanship, squash, and other sports, and was also a prolific artist and poet. He loved the outdoors, spending much of his time in the Kootenays and on a family acreage in Millarville, Alberta. Most of all he is remembered by his friends for his incredible generosity and kindness. A mass will be said in his honor at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Black Diamond, Alberta.

I just found out about this and I am so sad. He was a beautiful person inside and out and we are blessed to have known him from our Gonzaga years and then into a few here in Calgary. I recently read something by a favourite contemporary writer.. "every life is a word spoken and so shifts,a little, the balance of the world." Carl definitely shifted the balance of the world in a beautiful way.

My time with Carl was brief dating back to when we were teenagers in Calgary. My memories of him continue to weave in and out of my thoughts and they always make me smile. He was a unique person and I will always have a special place in my heart for Carl.

My dearest friend Carl, my Carlitto...
We met 12 years ago. I have nothing but the fondest memories of you... You for a gentle, kind heart. You loved life and living so much...
I am so honoured that I have met you and that we shared some amazing moments together. I can still smell you all around, and everywhere I look You are still here... and you all will be in my heart. You were our CEO, you introduced me to the greatest love of my life and there are no words that can describe the pain I feel for your early departure... You are missed so much I am fortunate enough that We were able to spend your last days together.
I guess I just have to wait, till I see you on the other side...
Love you forever!

Lise & Rod,

I am thankful that I was able to spend memorable times getting to know Carl in Calgary and later on in Vancouver. I was always impressed by his thoughtful choice of words and touched buy the soft spoken tone in his voice. Carl is a Good Soul and his genuine nature shined through in his personality...With his compassion I have a feeling he is likely already doing something great for us all from the other side with his unique artists touch.
My prayers go out to his family...

I first met Carl when he drove in to Nelson with his truck and a big dog and feathers and crystals on his dashboard, about 20 years ago. From then on he was a friend and a person that appeared in my life, with family, with friends, in so many circumstances that he just became part of our Kootenay Crew. I know he was part of so many different crews, around the world, but the West Kootenays will always hold BIG LOVE for Carl. His heart shines bright, wherever he is now, we can still feel him and always will. We had some really great times. i will always be able to hear him say Hopee, 'cause thats what he called me. his soft voice. i always felt comfort when I saw him, and love, because he had a presence about him that exuded those attributes. I will never forget him, and I know one day we shall meet again. So much love to his family in this time of sorrow. His life was short, but he was a great person , and some people who live long never even accomplish that. Peace.

Carl had more good friends than most people, and I'm fortunate to say I was one. I won't forget Carl or our times together. As others have noted, he was a generous, sensitive, talented, and fun-loving individual who enhanced the lives of those who knew him.

Unfortunately I had not seen Carl for many years but have fond memories of the time we spent together in Mexico while I was living there. I showed him the sights of Mexico City and then had a couple weeks in Ixtapa. You will be missed and never forgotten.

What can you say? Deepest sympathies to the family. Tragic and unexpected makes me sad that the last time him and I spoke it was about another unexpected death of our young friend Ryan. Missed you all the time already buddy......

Shocked and saddened to hear of Carlo's passing. It has been too long since I saw him last in Vancouver and just assumed I'd bump into him now recently back in Calgary. Many fond memories; his charm, good looks, easy smile, creativity, and ramblin' ways will always remind me of a modern day Jack Kerouac. Cheers to you Carlo.

Loved and love his character. Laughter and antics still rings in my memories. Was a gentleman and scholar of his own breed. Can anyone let me know the time of his celebration of life? If I can make it I will try.

Dear Rod, Lise and Rob,
I am so sorry for your loss. I only ran into Carl a few times in the last couple of decades but I will always smile when I think of hanging out with him in the halls of Bishop Carroll, at Stanley Park pool or at your house. He was a great person - kind, loyal, fun-loving. His joyful soul will be missed.

Very sad to hear of Carl's death at such an early age. Our children are supposed to outlive us and it must hurt beyond imagination when that does not happen. You are both in our thoughts.
