Carl Pohlad Obituary

Published by Star Tribune from Jan. 6 to Jan. 8, 2009.
Pohlad, Carl R. Carl R. Pohlad, an extraordinary husband, father and business entrepreneur, passed away peacefully at home in Edina on January 5, and joined his beloved wife of 56 years, Eloise O'Rourke Pohlad, who passed away in 2003. Carl was a born entrepreneur who combined a strong intuition, keen understanding of people, intense work ethic and abundant patience, to become one of the country's most successful business owners. He was revered by his employees and respected by business colleagues and friends around the country and the world. Despite his success, Carl always described himself as a "regular guy," treating people from all walks of life with respect, retaining a soft spot for the little guy, and never forgetting his humble beginnings. He was born in Valley Junction, Iowa on August 23, 1915. Carl's father was employed as a railroad brakeman and was often away, so Carl and his siblings worked hard to help their mother make ends meet. Only an average student, Carl excelled as an athlete and attended Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington on a football scholarship. But his entrepreneurial skills were already coming to the fore and he left college after his senior football season and moved to Dubuque, Iowa to become a partner in the Federal Discount Corporation (FDC), which operated loan offices in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois. In 1942, Carl's career was interrupted when he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He fought in France, Germany and Austria, and was awarded two Bronze Stars and three Purple Hearts. After the war, Carl returned to Dubuque and in 1946 met Eloise O'Rourke on a blind date at an Iowa-Minnesota football game. It was love at first sight and the couple married the next year. In 1952 the couple moved to Minneapolis and three years later, Carl was named president of Marquette National Bank. For the next 50 years, while the couple had and raised three boys, Carl built a business empire that would encompass banking, bottling, baseball and much more. Today the Pohlad family of businesses employs more than 3,000 people in more than 20 businesses across the United States. In addition, the Pohlad Family Foundations, established with Eloise in 1994, have given more than $100 million to community charities. Carl was a highly skilled entrepreneur and master dealmaker who loved business and maintained his love of simple pleasures -- fresh garden produce, baseball, or a good book before bedtime. In addition to Eloise, Carl was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Pohlad Kiefer, and father, Michael Pohlad; as well as 6 of his 7 siblings, Helen Stotesbery Quinn, Frances, Velma Urbain, Harold, Dorothy Dolphin and Joan Erickson. Carl is survived by their three boys, Jim, Bob and Bill, daughters-in-law, Donna, Becky and Michelle; grandchildren, Tom (and wife Lindsay), Joe, Chris, Allie, Charlie, Kiki and Oliver Pohlad, all of Minneapolis; sister, Jean White, and many nieces and nephews. Carl also is survived by the many business colleagues and friends and countless small business owners who realized their dreams, in part, because Carl enjoyed helping them and provided advice and resources when others refused. Services will be held at the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis Thursday, January 8 at 1 p.m. Memorials are preferred to Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation, University of Minnesota Foundation—Carl and Eloise Endowed Scholarship Fund, Mayo Clinic, Park Nicollet Foundation, the Minnesota Twins Community Fund or a charity of the donor's choice. My condolences to the family of Mr. Pohlad whom I knew through business for many years. His devotion to his family, especially his mother and wife, as well as his many long time business associates speaks volumes about the man. I am sure he is loved and will be missed and we are all better for him having been here.

Rosemary and I send our sympathies to the Pohlad Family and to our neighbor and friend in our St. Louis Park days, Jean Pohlad White.
Jean introduced us only a few times in those years to her brother Carl, but his wonderful character and kindness shone through.

To the Pohlad family,
I remember when I was working for Marquette Bank in the old F&M building, Mr. Pohlad would sometimes come down to the teller line to make a withdrawal. He was always so gracious to the staff and I know how much they appreciated it. My time working with Marquette was wonderful--I only wish that there were still places like that to work. Mr. Pohlad was a kind man and I am grateful to have worked for him. Best wishes and deepest sympathy to all of you.

I am so sorry for the loss of your father and grandfather. I wish he could have lived to see the new Twins Stadium. I hope that on opening day at the new facility an appropriate memorial is made to this great man. And I echo the comment made about Kirby Puckett welcoming Carl to heaven!

Jim,

Your mom and my mom were friendly for thirty years; your dad and I were friendly acquaintances for 15 years.

When you and I saw each other the other day and I asked you to say hello to your dad from me, I think neither of us realized how final that hello might be.

Life is fragile and the veil that separates life and death is always very thin.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Your parents were very fine people.

Our sincere sympathy goes out to the entire family for your loss. Your "dad", "uncle" or "Grandpa" was a great man!

He also made wonderful contributions to so many and hopefully more will come forward to tell their stories. Mike is out of the country or otherwise he would extend his warm wishes in person. Carl will certainly be remembered as a great mentor, teacher, boss and friend!

Our children, particularly our two young sons (10 & 8) are huge Twins fans and shared some fun stories of how they remember this warm and gentle man.

Keep sharing those wonderful memories and please know you are in our thoughts and prayers.

I remember when Carl said to Tom Welch "sounds like a solid idea; let's be the first". So Marquette Bank acquired our asset management business in 1972 and renamed it Marquette Capital Management. I spent the next 15 years working for Carl and was one of his senior VP's until I trained in Pat to run the Trust Department. A great man to work for and one who has taught me about asking what can go wrong with any investment [we all know what can go right]; that's why he funded Irwin's W.T Grant receivable funding beacuse Irwin said what could go wrong. Thanks Carl for your lessons and keep the torch burning-Jim, Bill & Bob.

ALL MY BEST TO THE POHLAD FAMILY during this time of thanksgiving for the life of CARL POHLAD. It was my pleasure to serve, even buss his table and get to know him and associates for years while I was working at the Minneapolis Club. To the Pohlad Family,
I want to extend my sympathy to you all. When in 1981 I had gotten a job at Marquette Bank, at the same time farmers and Mechanics Bank your dad bought and was getting ready to buy the Twins also, it was needed to bring his assets up and liabilities down, so they were laying off 65-75 people a day at Marquette. I was a tv teller in the IDS before my layoff from Marquette and with the recession, and just gotten married in May/1981, and when this happened I was out of work for 15 months and because of the recession, got a job $50 a week taking care of children for a foster mom part time, as hard as it was, at one point when years later, purchasing a home in Shakopee, closing in October/1996, had to wait for our 401k withdrawl from my husband employer until after January 1,97, went into Marquette Bank in Shakopee, and explained my dilema, and the vice president at the Shakopee Bank believe in me and my integrity and gave me a short term loan and the vice president under your dad was there to help me, as waiting for our 401 k loan to add to our closing costs, they opened the doors and was very grateful, one promise I made to this man was I was not going to let him down, which I did not, came in and paid the whole balance borrowed non collateral before the due date. I am very grateful for your dad, shortly after that Wells Fargo purchased your family's Marquette Banks, and if I had not had this opportunity from your dad, this story would have had a different ending, I am very grateful for Mr. Carl Pohlad. He was a great teacher, and for all could learn from him.

With Sympathy,
Elaine M Zeiher
