Carl Shoup Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 27, 2016.
Carl Henry Shoup
October 12, 1955 - May 21, 2016
Carl was born to Ivan Carl Shoup and Bertha Rosalie Baker. He graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1974. All of Carl's life he was a thrill seeker and shortly after high school he began racing dirt bikes. Ultimately, he became number one in the state but while practicing for an upcoming race he crashed and broke his back. After he recovered, he began drag racing motorcycles and raced for several years. He also began working at Holsum Bakery; he worked there for many years. After Holsum, Carl worked at G J Steel. One day, on the job, Carl lost his thumb. However no injury could ever hold him down...he just had his right big toe removed, then reattached to his left hand, which became a fully functional thumb.
In 1988, Carl met the love of his life, Abigail Allsworth. They were married on July 2, 1988. Shortly after marrying his soul mate, he took on a new adventure and started his own company, Shoup Enterprise Stator Repair.
After closing his shop years later, he went back to work at Holsum Bakery. While working at Holsum, on a day off, he went for a motorcycle ride. While riding that day, a guy driving a truck that was pulling a trailer clipped him causing him to crash. He had multiple injuries including a broken femur. After another recovery, Carl began working at Industrial Screen and Maintenance. He just hit ten years on a job he truly loved. He also made some amazing friends there!!!
Carl was a real animal lover and he especially loved his dogs! He was an excellent dog trainer. There's nothing he couldn't train them to do, from normal dog stuff like getting his slippers, all the way to knowing and getting whatever tool Carl asked for. They knew how to carefully walk around his airplanes. Everything you could imagine, those dogs could do.
Carl had been building and flying control line airplanes all his life. He really enjoyed learning everything he could about everything he was interested in. Everything he did he quickly gained expert status. He was also a wonderful teacher and he loved to pass on his knowledge and skills. One thing he looked forward to every year was meeting with a group of special needs kids and teaching them to fly the airplanes.
He and Abigail shot Sporting Clays for many years together. He also shot trap and skeet. But his love of shooting also crossed over into handguns. He loved all types of shooting, and won several competitions.
Carl is preceded in death by his grandparents; his mother, Bertha Shoup, and his great-nephew, Dylan McDonald.
He is survived by wife, Abigail Shoup; father, Ivan Shoup; brother, Rick Kauffman; sister, Rose (Mike) Romero; sister, Kimberly Smith; nieces, Jamie Shoup (Kimberly Morrison), Amy McDonald, and Ivy Smith; nephews, Tyler Romero, and Matthias Gonzales; great-nieces, Jordan Morrison, Tamaira McDonald, and Maleaka McDonald; great-nephews, Skyler McDonald, and Julius McDonald, and too many amazing friends to list!!!
Memorial services will be held this Saturday, May 28, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., in the Jubilee Family Church of Grand Junction, Colorado.
Services are entrusted to Palisade Funeral Home.

I cannot believe another year has passed. It's been 6 years since you were with us, I've missed 6 years of holidays, 6 years of you trying to grose me out with your thumb I'm thankful for everything you have taught me, from fitting one whole slice of pizza in my mouth, to four wheeling, and shooting. I treasure all my memories with you! Fly high, please give my daddy a hug, and a giant kiss for my sweet baby boy.

I can't believe another year has passed without you! I cherish everything you've ever taught me, from how to fit one whole slice of pizza in my mouth, to riding four-wheelers, and shooting. Most of my best childhood memories had you in them. Fly high uncle, give my dad a hug and Dylan a kiss from me I love and miss you tremendously!

I will miss you old friend. You accepted me no matter what. I know we did not stay in touch after I moved but I often thought of you. I will miss being a pit man for you at control line combat and you being mine for mouse racing. You taught me many things about flying control line.

I bought his '76 Yamaha 400. Said it was in perfect shape .... and it was indeed. Steve Cejka and I tore up a lot of adobe. Go hit that skinny Ridge in the sky Carl. Gods blessings to his family.
