Carl was our good neighbor for many years when he and his wife Barbara lived in Ithaca, NY. He was an easy going and gracious presence, generally soft spoken, but when he said something, you really wanted to listen closely, because what he said was often thought-provoking, insightful, or funny, or all the above. His delightful intellect was shining through, and you didn´t want to miss it! He had the glow of someone who enjoyed living and exceled at the things he enjoyed most. This was his greatest gift. He shared this gift enthusiastically with others, weaving it into the fabric of his life both at work and at play. This was the twinkle in his eye. He was kind and always helpful. He was warm and joyful company at the dinner table. Despite his accomplishments he was always humble. He was strong and determined, even at the most difficult times. On this one-year anniversary of his passing we are remembering him by imagining a rugged, smiling-ear-to-ear Carl swooshing masterfully down the ski slope, skillfully maneuvering ropes on his sailboat, peacefully devouring the newspaper in his backyard and toasting another fine day at the dinner table alongside his wonderful wife Barbara. Today we offer a toast to you dear Carl, thank you for being part of our lives, your spirit lives on!

Carl and I were friends from our freshman year at Penn through graduation. He was loyal, a history buff and bridge aficionado. Beta was my stop-off point on Friday afternoon on my way back to DEKE. Loved the cold beer from the refer that housed a keg and outside tap. We lost contact many decades ago, wish I had known he was in Taos, skied there several times in the 90s. Our condolences to his family, the Betas and all who had the fortune to know Carl and laugh the night away. RIP Buddy. Dick and Ginny

I last saw Carl in 2017 at a 50th reunion of sorts for the Beta house at Penn. We had a few wonderful nights of reminiscing and catching up. Amazingly, it seemed that we shared so many views on the issues of the day. Even more amazingly, we both discussed how our lives had gravitated to careers that suited us perfectly. I was glad to learn that he spent his life teaching people how to have fun and enjoy life...because years earlier he had made my life happier and more enjoyable when we shared an apartment in Philly. My sympathy goes to his family and extended family of friends who will miss him dearly.

I am Carl's friend and fraternity brother from Penn and shared many sessions with him as we learned the complexities of our major in Bridge. We shared a love for football and played some rugby as well. The last time I saw Carl was 2017, the 50th Anniversary of our college lodging being closed. If you knew Carl you love and admire him. He used his Ivy League education well teaching myriads of folks to ski... can't beat that! Say hello to Father Wooglin for us Carl!

As energetic, capable and accomplished as Carl was, he was never competitive. In fact, he seemed more concerned that the people around him felt safe and exhilarated than he was with his own experience. In the many years we knew Carl, we were never more impressed with his constitution than we were those last three years since his diagnosis. He was optimistic, patient and enduring beyond belief. He never lost his sense of humor or interest in life, right up until his last breath. He and Barbara were truly inspiring in their partnership. Well done! We'll miss you Carl. We'll miss hearing your "hello there!" every time we called. You are a wonderful spirit and a gentle soul. Fly free and keep smiling.

The mountain lately seemed a measure less, without Carl physically present. (His spirit, however, could already be felt to linger.) He was easy to spot from the lift, skiing in his graceful and unmistakable style. Whenever I ran into him on the mountain, I liked to ask where he had been that morning, which always seemed to have involved a hike (before a.m. lessons) to test conditions on some far-flung aspect of the Ridge. Here's to you Carl, and a rugged sporting life well-lived.

My first meeting with Carl was in ski week, and on a deep powder day, he said follow me! I stayed in his tracks and it is still one of my most memorable runs. He will be sorely missed.

Carl was the king of Sweep, he skied from 9-4 and then hung out to help patrol do sweep. He was a great friend, an awesome boss and a skiing maniac! I hope he is making endless turns in fields of powder!
