Carl Sloane Obituary
Carl S. Sloane, the Ernest L. Arbuckle Professor of Business Administration, Emeritus, Harvard Business School, passed away on July 28, 2015 after a brief illness. He was the son of George and Dorothy Sloane, was born in Brooklyn, New York on February 9, 1937. He leaves his beloved wife of 56 years, Toby M. Sloane (ne Tattlebaum), his children Lisa, Amy, and Todd, and their spouses Robert, Nicolas, and Lili, his five cherished grandchildren Alexandra, Charles, Olivia, Sally, and Ian, and his brothers Richard and Stephen Sloane. He resided in Highland Beach, Florida.
After graduating from Far Rockaway High School in 1954, he attended Harvard University, Class of 1958 and Harvard Business School, graduating with honors in 1960. In a career spanning nearly fifty years, Professor Sloane spent thirty years in management consulting, the last twenty with the firm he co-founded, Temple, Barker & Sloane, and its successor firm, Mercer Management Consulting, where he served as Chairman and CEO. He also served as Co-Chairman of Alix Partners/Questor Holdings, and as Chairman of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. In addition to consulting, he served on the Boards of Andell, Ltd., American President Companies, The Brinks Company, Ionics, Leaseway Transportation, MedSource Technologies, Moore McCormack, Rayonier and Sapient.
At Harvard Business School, his principal focus was on leadership of organizations undergoing significant, transformational change. Through a lifetime engagement to entrepreneurship, teaching and philanthropy his charismatic, thoughtful vision for leadership has been shared with many who will carry it forth as his legacy.
His lifelong philanthropic engagement included service on the boards of Boston's Combined Jewish Philanthropies, Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians at BIDMC, the Cardio Vascular Institute at BIDMC, the Jewish Federation of the North Shore, the Jewish Community Center of Marblehead, and the Harvard Hillel Foundation. He and Toby were also active supporters of Congregation Shirat Hayam, Birthright Israel, AIPAC, and Friends of the IDF.
Deeply caring, generous, and passionately engaged in his family and the communities he was part of, he touched the lives of many by whom he'll be remembered.
Services at Congregation Shirat Hayam, 55 Atlantic Avenue, Swampscott on Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at 1:00 pm. Interment at Congregation Shirat Hayam Cemetery, Temple Israel Section, Peabody. Memorial observance Wednesday evening and Thursday evening at his late residence. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, c/o Chris Laping, 330 Brookline Avenue, Boston, MA 02215. Dear Toby, We were all so sad to hear of Carl's passing. We have wonderful memories of the kids growing up together and spending time with the both of you. Toby, I was saddened to hear, first, that Carl had taken ill and, then, to hear of his passing. In all of his work with our Jewish community, Carl was a gentleman in every sense of the word. Dear Toby
It's been 60 years since the Sr. class of FRHS recognized how special Carl was when we chose him to be the most likely to succeed. It was easy to see but at that time none of us new the true definition of success. Carl has taught us the true meaning of success---in his personal life, his academic life, his business career(s) and in his community. And all this was done in a humane way benefiting everyone he dealt with. A very special life, a very special person.

Dear Toby,
Catherine and I are deeply saddened to hear of Carl's passing. He was a warm and generous leader, and a thoughtful, caring partner to all of us at TBS, and he leaves us much too soon. He launched and shaped numerous careers, and was a welcome presence with our families -- especially every December as Santa Claus!
There are many elements of his legacy, but as we've all gone on to other pursuits in life, the binding energy he provided for TBS still holds us together today.
He's gone now, and we'll miss him tons, but he's still here in so many ways.
