Dear Taylor and Jodi,
Your Mom was such a gem. In graduate school we talked about going into private practice together when we were both licensed. We would say to each other that she would work with the adults, and I would work with the kids. As I sit in my office I reflect on all the lessons your mom taught me. She used to say, "You have a plan, and then life happens. It does." I think that I am beginning to understand what she meant by this assertion. It would be an honor to connect with the both of you. At your convenience, please contact me at [email protected]. I look forward to hearing from you. Be well.

I CANT STOP THINKING ABOUT HER. HER SMILE USE TO LIGHT UP ANY DARK ROOM. I CAN STILL HEAR HER CALLING MY NAME. I CAN SEE HER DRIVING THE POLICE CAR. BLOWING THE HORN TO GET MY ATTENTION. HER HAIR STYLE WAS ALWAYS DIFFERENT. HER UNIFORM WAS ALWAYS PRESSED. SHE WOULD ASK ME ABOUT THE COLOGNE I WAS WEARING. CARLA I WISH... YOU WERE HERE. BECAUSE I STILL CARE....RIP CARLA HUBBARD. Not a day goes by that I don't think about Carla. She was a dear graduate school colleague. We shared how we would go into private practice in the future together. Her support and warmth was unparalleled. I think about her often. Each client I see, I ask for Carla strength to guide me. I want to work on a research project and include her name on the work providing that her family is in agreement. Carla was a true scholar and friend. Happy belated birthday Carla!

Taylor and Jodi, I know its hard but keep your faith in God. God knows and sees everything. Your mom will be forever in your hearts, her spirit is with you everyday. You may not physically see her, but she will see you graduate and get married, I know because I feel her presence every day. I see her beautiful smile everytime I see You (Taylor and Jodi) she lives through you girls. You are everything you mom hoped for, your beauty ,laughter, wit and kindness. You are so much like your mom. When ever I had a problem your mom would always tell me to read Psalms 27, But she would emphasize on verse 14 "WAIT ON THE LORD : Be of good courage and he shall streghten thine heart wait, I say, on the LORD", this was her favorite and she would also say "Let Go and Let GOD" so remember these words of encouragement, because I know your mom has said these words to you and hold on to those wonderful memories in your heart, do not be discourage just know she's in Heaven with the Master and she's with you every step of the way. You are in my prayers each and everyday. Love You

To the family of Carla Hubbard,
May Carla's beautiful smile, eye's and genuine personality forever remain present in your hearts. We attended Fifth Avenue and Brashear together. We had many enjoyable moments while cheerleading in High School. I would see Carla on occassions and we would talk and laugh about things. I had the opportunity to meet Taylor and Jodi when they were very young. Carla will be truly missed. May God comfort and strengthen you during this time of sorrow.

Today is August 14, 2009 I am still in a state of shock about the death of a life long friend, a sister, a confidont, a bestfriend, a godmother to my oldest son, she was everything. Growing up with Carla was a pure joy. I enjoyed being her friend and knowing her the way I did. I am so blessed to have had her in my life. Alot of time we dont say it to each other how much they mean to us until they cant hear it. Thats when it too late. We honor them after they are gone. They dont know how we felt about them. We need to reach out to our true friends, life long friends, family members and people who have made a difference in our lives and let them know while they can hear it just how important they are to us. After they are gone is too late. Try telling someone that you like them not love them but like them. Liking someone is a hard thing but people throw the words I love you out like its air. Everyone hears it whether its true or not. Its hard to say I like you but with Carla, I like her. We didnt spend much of our adult life together but what times we did will always be cherished. We both became police officer then detectives. We both enjoyed people and the work that we chose as our careers. I promise to pay closer attention to the people around me and be there for them when they cant be there for themselves. After they are gone is too late. Jodi and Taylor we have a lot in common too ladies. We loved a beautiful woman. Taylor you and I share a birthdate together and we will also remember that on our birthday in the year of 2009 we had to say our final goodbye to a beautiful woman, Carla. I love you girls. Im glad you were able to come to Atlanta if only for a few days and spend time with me, Jazze, Jenn and Mike. We are looking forward to seeing great things come from you ladies. We are a part of your lives forever. If you ever need to get away we are only a phone call away. To all of our classmates from Brashear High School, Fifth Avenue and A. Leo Weil, we all need to reach out to each other and say hello while we can hear and accept it because the reunions at funerals are not happy occassions. I love you all. If anyone wishes to reach out to me you can do so on facebook under Jacqueline Shealey Lewis. To Ms Carol, my love and prayers goes out to you for your loss. Tony, please take great care of those beautiful daughters of yours and Carlas. They need you now more then ever. Love you guys very much.

Dearest Taylor, Jodie, Carol, and family-
Carla was more than a graduate colleague, she was one of my dear friends. My first introduction to her was in a theories course in which the professor asked us to identify which color would best suit our mood for the day. It was an ice breaker technique. I cannot remember which color I said, but I vividly remember Carla's response which was "White." When the professor asked her why, Carla responded, "I try to be a pure person." The sun light was radiant in her eyes as she spoke. It was clear to me that this person was truly unique and real. The next piece of personal information she shared was that she was a mother and was close to her family as well as a police officer. She talked proudly about her daughters, and our friendship began to bloom. We would often go to the cafe to share coffee and Cheese-its. Carla and I would playfully quarrel about who would pay for the energy boost, and she often won. I still feel indebted to her generosity.
Carla loved Adlerian theory and she often used him as a reference in her papers. She was a social giver who asked for no return in classes.
One of my fondest memories involves Carla introducing herself to an entire auditorium of graduate students. Without delay, Carla stepped into the packed room and with a waving gesture stated emphatically, "Hi, I'm Carla!" The other students weren't sure how to respond to the abundant invitation set by Carla. Those in the room who knew her began to roar with laughter, and the new students began to see the warmth that constituted Carla.
Carla never complained and would often remind others to stay hopeful. After a long day of work, Carla would arrive at class with pizza in hand to share with her fellow students. She was grounded, bright, and nurturing. She is an unforgetable person and her cheerful smile will always resonate in my heart.

I am so saddened by Carla's passing. Carla was one of my students at Chatham University. I always looked forward to seeing her in class because she brought such a beautiful energy into the room. Her smile just filled the room with a wonderful presence. I can only imagine how many people's hearts she touched with her open heart and welcoming presence. To Ms. Carol, Carla was my best friend, my sister we grew up together and the memories I have of her take up a great part of my life. She was a part of my whole family, Carla called my mom, mom and my aunts, aunty-and my dad 'Rock', cause he was a sanitation officer, lol. although we haven't spent the last 15 years hanging out together, there was a time in our lives that we were inseperatable; you would not see one without the other, those were good times and some of the best years of my life.I never stopped being a close friend. I will miss her more than I've ever missed her.I feel a deep sorrow and loss for my friend and I know your loss and the girls' loss is much greater. May God make it easy for you all, ameen.
Love always.

To the family of Carla Hubbards'
Words can not come close to saying how shocked and saddened I am of hearing of Carla's passing. We were fellow grad students at Chatham and I will always remember her as a kind caring and just plain wonderful human being. I often wondered how she could maintain her heavy work load of going to school, working and trying to maintain a normal life.
I will miss her greatly and my prayers are with her family and all of her friends as she was one of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure to know.
I miss you Carla, may God be with you.

To the Hubbard Family,
My deepest sympathies. I first met Carla at Brashear H.S., she was always an affectionate, friendly person. When Carla joined the Police force, it was great to have another person from the H.S on the force. Then, we were in the hospital at the same time delivering of our children. In passing, we would always asked how the kids were doing. I don't know you girls personally, but you had a wonderful mom. Her expression always made a person feel better because she had such a cheerful spirit. God bless you, and your Grandmother, I know Carla is an angel, she helped so many people during her stay. GOD BLESS

To The Hubbard Family,
My deepest sympathies may God touch and bless you in your time of need. I met Carla at Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Ga in the eary 1980's. Carla had an affectionate smile and a way of making you feel you were loved. When she found out that I was from Pittsburgh she would refer to me as her home boy and I would refer to her as my home girl. I had a great amount of respect for Carla as she represented herself and her family extremely well as a Pittsburgh Police officer and more importantly a great human being. Carla was a very caring person and had a way of touching people with her bright smile and kind words.

My fiance and I attended Chatham University with Carla. As we lay in bed last night, we were talking about our memories of her. Craig remembered that she had a very soft voice and affectionately called everyone "sugar" or "sweetie". I remember seeing her all dressed in uniform over at the Waterworks when taking a lunch break with her partner. I remember having Family Therapy with her, and really appreciating the unique perspective on families that she brought to the table as a result of her experiences in law enforcement. She was a strong role model - there are not enough females out there doing the things she was doing, and aspiring to what she evolved into.
No words can be said to make the pain go away in the hearts of those hurting over this. I can recommend a place in Squirrel Hill that does grief counseling for free, and they do it over the phone if you are too immobilized by your grief to go there. It is called the Good Grief Center.
Sincerely,

To the Family of Ms. Carla. With respect and humility, I send my deepest sympathy. To read all the entries in this book is a testimony to the beauty, intelligence, and humanity of Ms. Carla Hubbard. And now the light in our lives is a bit dimmer, for our loss of this lady of grace and sweetness. Anyone who is a mother or a daughter, is left in sorrow, at the thought of Carla's mother, and her daughters. For them, a cherished baby, and an adored heroine, in Carla, are gone. God is the only one who can heal that pain. May God Bless and keep you, then, in His care.

There are times in this life, that nothing makes sense. We are lifted by the promise of a life that fills us with joy, only to feel so betrayed when that promise isn't fulfilled.
Sometimes the answers aren't clear for us. We can't understand why things can happen as they do. There is only One that knows. He feels your sorrow...knows your grief...and holds you close in His heart.
The Lord is close to those whose hearts are breaking
Psalm 34:18

Dearest Hubbard Family,
My heart hangs low,my soul morns,my spirt grives with the reality of a loved one gone. The shock of the news stills affects me and I can't stop weeping...Carla was insturmental figure in my teenage and young adult lifestyle. She never had biological siblings but was blessed with a host of brothers and sisters growing up in Waring Ct. We were encouraging to one another growing up and always took heed to the suggestions I shared with her as if she was my little sister...and she was...Our inner circle on Waring Ct. was a community, because we communicated honestly with one another. When I did wrong in her loving way,she let me know. My wife wished she could have met Carla by virtue of my reaction to this sudden loss. Carla was one of the few people outside my family who always believe in me. She will be truly missed but Allah immortized her thru her daughters..I'm convinced they will keep her legacy alive. This is very difficult to accept...You have my deepest simpathy

What a priviledge and a blessing it is to have known Carla. From day one in the Police Academy, her beautiful smile brightened the room and her heart overflowed with love. We had the chance to work together as partners when Jodie and Taylor were young. She loved them both so much, and every day she had a new sweet story of what they had done to make her smile that morning. She never failed to daily thank God for each and every blessing in her life, especially her mother who she absolutely adored. And she always reminded everyone else of the blessings they were given. Carla was a blessing to me, and will always be a treasured friend.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To the family of Carla Hubbard:
I have known Carla for many years. She and I attended Brashear High School together, and then we met up again as we were going through the process of becoming a Pittsburgh Police Officer. Carla was such a beautiful person from the inside out. She had the biggest smile and a winning personality. She was kind and loving and we often spoke about the goodness of the Lord. She will truly be missed. We know to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, so let us all find solace in knowing the we loved Carla deeply, but God loves her even more. May she rest in His tender arms forever. You and your family are in our hearts and our prayers.

To the Hubbard Family,
I would like to send my condolences to you and let you know you are in my prayers. What I will remember about Carla most is her beautiful smile. I cannot remember a day when I didn't see her smile. She was a special person and always held special place in the hearts of my family. As a child, I would walk a little more upright and poke my chest out a little more when she referred to me as her "little boyfriend". She is truly an Angel.

To the Hubbard Family:
I have known Carla all my life. She is a big sister to me. I was a young lady blessed with many sisters because we lived in such a close community, keeping me on the straight and narrow. I always admired Carla's spirit, showing everyone she encountered love and kindness with a down to earth nature.(such a rare quality for one to have today) Truly, her calling was Law Enforcement, she had her own way of making people feel safe and secure. She spoke for other's when they could not speak for themselves. I am so glad I got to say "Thank You"! You have been a living Angel to me.(My Saving Grace) I will remember you always.
Rest in peace.

Oh my Lord, I can't stop crying. She is my sister and dearest friend. My daughter's God mother, my children's aunt, my family loves her, my brother and sister adored her. If the sun had a name it would be called "Carla's smile". She was filled with kindness ,joy and love. She did not have a selfish bone in her body. All I could is cry. She is simply beautiful. Ms. Carol if you need me , please let me know , Taylor and Jodie I will be here for you no matter what. We are family. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
