Dr. Carlton G. Apgar

Carlton G. Apgar, D.O., 85 of Huntington, passed away Friday, February 4, 2011 in St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was born October 30, 1925 in Morristown, N.J. the son of the late Carlton Culver and Anna Atteridg Apgar. He was a graduate of Johns Hopkins University. He received his D.O. from College of Osteopathic Medicine & Surgery, Des Moines Iowa and served his internship at Osteopathic Hospital of Maine. He was a WWII veteran serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He practiced Osteopathic Medicine for 54 years in Huntington. During his career he was past Treasurer and President of the WV Society of Osteopathic Medicine, a member of the House of Delegates for the American Osteopathic Association for 20 years, Co-founder of the Greenbrier College of Osteopathic Medicine founded in 1972 and served as Chairman of the Board 1972-1973. He signed over Greenbrier College of Osteopathic Medicine to the State of WV and helped start the new WV School of Osteopathic Medicine in 1974. In 1976 he received from WV School of Osteopathic Medicine an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science. And was the first president of WV School of Osteopathic Medicine Foundation (WVSOM Foundation). He Received from the WV Society of Osteopathic Medicine, Practitioner of the Year in 1978 and Distinguished Service Award in 1982. He was a Commissioner of the Huntington Housing Authority for 5 years. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Kellogg Apgar; five children, Dr. Drew C. Apgar, Deborah Lonergan, Dr. David Apgar, Diane Proia, and Dawn Davis; 15 grandchildren, Jennifer Apgar, Carlton and John Apgar, Sea, Brian and Tim Lonergan, Devin Holt, Justin, Kelly, Stephen, and Jordan Apgar, Brandon, Brittany and Samantha Proia and Glenn Davis and nine great-grandchildren. Services will be held 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 8, 2011 by Brian Lonergan at Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary. Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery.
