GARSTANG Carmel Evelyn Davis Garstang, passed away Tuesday, September 26, 2006, at Cox Medical Center in Springfield, Mo. Carmel Evelyn Davis was born on December 26, 1925, in Higginsville, Mo. She was the daughter of Arthur Davis and Myrtle Miles Davis. Carmel Davis attended elementary and high school in various places, including Johnson, Neb. and Belle, Mo., as her family found employment where they could during the depression. She attended the Molar Beautician College in St. Louis, Mo. and was a licensed beautician and owned and operated a practice in Memphis, Tenn. On March 9, 1944, Carmel Davis married William E. Garstang of Belle, Mo. William and Carmel Garstang settled in Belle, Mo. and raised their four children there. Carmel Garstang was a homemaker and also worked in the optometric practice of her husband, Dr. William E. Garstang. Mrs. Garstang was very active in the First Baptist Church of Belle, Mo. where she was a member for 54 years. Carmel Garstang was a loving and giving mother and wife and was a good and faithful member of her church. She worked with children programs in the First Baptist Church for many years. Carmel Evelyn Garstang was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur Davis and Myrtle Miles Davis; her brothers, Orville Davis, Monte Davis and Larry Davis; her sister Juanita Davis Shanks; and her grandsons, Aaron Phelps and Terrell Phelps. Carmel Evelyn Garstang is survived by her son Gregory E. Garstang and his wife Bella of Centennial, Colo., her son, Dr. Dennis W. Garstang and his wife Mimi of Rolla, Mo., and her son James E. Garstang and his wife Connie and their son Ryan; her daughter, Patricia Evelyn Garstang Phelps and her husband, Randall of Republic, Mo. Carmel Evelyn Garstang is survived by five grandchildren, Dr. Bradley Garstang of Liberty, Mo., Brian Garstang of Reston, Va., Kyle Garstang of Salt Lake City, Utah, Sarah Phelps of Republic, Mo., and Jason Phelps of Tampa, Fla. Carmel is survived by two great grandchildren, Will and Breanne Garstang of Liberty, Mo. Carmel is also survived by her brother Stanley Davis of St. Clair, Mo.; and her sisters, Dorothy Goodman of Mobile, Ala., Joann Story of Tallahassee, Fla.; Shirley McClung of Farmersville, Ill., and Launa Rose Brown of Sullivan, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at the Sassman's Funeral Home in Belle, Mo. on Thursday, September 28, 2006, beginning at 5:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Belle, Mo. at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 29, 2006. Carmel Evelyn Garstang was a well liked and respected figure in her community and will be greatly missed by her family.
