Carol Jean Alvares (nee States) passed away on August 9th, 2025, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on August 1 on Hwy 49 near Auburn. She passed away at Sutter Roseville Hospital with family by her side.

Carol was born February 16, 1939, in San Jose, California to Alice and Glen (Steve) States. Alice and Steven had moved to San Jose from Rippey, Iowa and Carol maintained lifelong ties to her Iowa relatives. Carol attended elementary school in San Jose, and then the family moved to the Willow Glen neighborhood where Carol attended Markham Jr. High School and Willow Glen High School. s a child, she took dancing lessons, played piano, was active in the Rainbow Girls Service Organization and was a Campfire Girl and camp counselor. The family returned to visit Rippey, Iowa, several times. She graduated from Willow Glen High School with honors in 1957.

Carol attended San Jose State University, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She studied elementary education and speech correction, and she graduated with honors in 1962.

Carol married her high school sweetheart, Robert "Bob" Alvares on January 1,1959 and they were married for 66 years. They had two children, Robin Alvares of Kent, Ohio, Mark Alvares of San Jose, CA. Their first home was in Campbell, California, and they built a home in San Jose in 1964. In 1971, the family moved to Los Gatos, California, where Carol and Bob lived until 1998. The family enjoyed camping, fishing and visiting historic sights. Carol, Bob and Mark spent several summers working at Bristol Bay Lodge in Alaska.

Carol was passionate about education, and she held a number of positions as an educator. She worked as a school speech therapist in Cupertino, as a teacher at Hillbrook School in Los Gatos, and as a teacher at the Westerner Preschool in San Jose. Later she worked as education support staff at Alta Vista Elementary in San Jose, CA.

In 1998, Carol and Bob built their dream home in Nevada City, California. She loved living in the mountains. The couple also traveled frequently with the Road Scholar Program. They visited many parts of the United States including Colonial Williamsburg, Hawaii, and the Rocky Mountains. They also ventured internationally to New Zealand and the Galapagos Islands.

In March 2000, Mark married Sandy Sabatte. Mark and Sandy had two daughters, Julianne and Molly, and Carol and Bob became proud grandparents. While living in Nevada City, Carol often entertained visiting family and friends and volunteered as a teacher's aide.

In December 2021, Carol and Bob moved to Eskaton Village in Grass Valley. Carol, an avid reader and history lover, was active in the Book Group and was a frequent patron of Nevada County's library services. She and Bob continued to take day trips in the mountains and visit friends around Northern California.

Carol is survived by her husband, Bob Alvares, daughter Robin Alvares, son Mark Alvares, daughter-in-law Sandy Sabatte-Alvares and granddaughters Julianne Alvares and Molly Alvares.

At private memorial service is planned.
