Carol BATT Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 14, 2021.
BATT, Dr. Carol Mohr Dr. Carol Mohr Batt, born December 15, 1945 to Carol and Bunny Mohr, passed away on Saturday, March 6, 2021 at the age of 75. She was born and raised in Spokane, Washington, and graduated from Shadle Park High before going to college while working full time and raising three children to pursue her degree. She also lived in Connecticut and Southern California, and for the last decade of her life, lived in Seattle and the greater Seattle area. Whether you knew her as Carol, Jean, AC, Dr. Batt, Doc, Dr. Mom, Bombie, Mom, or Grandma, she was one of the most loving people you would ever meet. Each and every one of these names came from deep appreciation for such a wonderful, strong human being. Among Dr. Batt's many accomplishments, earning her Ph.D from the department of Psychology at Washington State University in 1992 was one of her greatest. With this degree, she taught psychology at schools throughout the country, including Sacred Heart University in Connecticut, Humboldt State University and Palm Desert Community College in California, and Seattle Colleges. She was devoted to sharing her extensive knowledge with those around her, inside the classroom and anywhere she went. Her students adored her and the way she taught, and there is no question that she loved and supported every single one of her students. Teaching was her passion, and she taught all the way through to the end of her life. In the last few months of her life, one of her grandchildren even had the opportunity to take a college class from her. In addition to being a professor of psychology, Dr. Batt took pride in being a very spiritual person. In her classes, she continually emphasized the importance and usefulness of meditation and mindfulness. While mindfulness is an increasingly common practice in schools today, Dr. Batt introduced mindfulness practices to her students and coworkers before it was widely accepted. She was also an active and cherished member of Genesis Center for Spiritual Living where she served her community with unconditional love as a Religious Science Practitioner. Dr. Batt will be remembered as a strong, brilliant, generous, sensitive, insightful, and beautiful soul. She always had an incredibly welcoming smile and spirit, and a heart of gold. She was not friends with everyone, but she would have been if she could. She was always one to sit down with others to have in-depth, meaningful conversations that could make anyone feel warmed and welcomed. If you knew her, you know that she would make a point to connect with you on a deeper level in order to make you feel understood and appreciated, and she never failed to make you smile and laugh. After living through many health issues, Dr. Batt passed away peacefully in her sleep. However, she will be kept alive through her siblings, Patty Mohr and Charlie Mohr, and her sister-in-law Carole Kenkel-Mohr. She will also be survived through her children, Heidi Batt, William Mohr Batt, Holly Batt and son-in-law Jason Lear; and grandchildren, Colby and Isaac Batt, Josh and Maeve Churchill, and Maggie and Hammet Lear. Love doesn't die, People do. So, when all that's left of me Is love, Give me away. -From "Epitaph" by Merrit Malloy

I knew Carol , in the late 70s. She was one of the head counselors, at a girls camp I was going to the following week, I was 15 years old, she was very understanding about things most others, weren´t comfortable talking about, and just knew what to say, or whether, to just hold a frightened mixed up 15 year old girl , quietly, not judging, just knowing as if she´d been there herself. I loved her for that, I never had a chance to thank her, I lost touch with her, now 50+ years later, I find her on Facebook, only to find she passed away just 7 months ago!! But I´m so pleased to hear she was able to accomplish her goals and dreams. That she taught, and supported, and encouraged, so many people, sharing her wonderful sense of gentle humor, her way with words, was just Amazing, and her eyes were caring, expressive, soft, at time Sad, like many I think her life had rough patches , disappointments, things like that, "Life" you know, we´ve all been there, no one is perfect!! But she was such a strong person!!
I just want her 2 Daughters, two know, and her Son, that I am so sorry for the loss of you Mom, when I saw , Both Holly and Heidi´s pictures , especially Heidi´s, I thought your Mom had 2 Facebook pages! You look so much like your Mom, (but younger), Holly you look a lot like her too!! You are both just Amazing!! Billy your Amazing !!! Anyway I probably, wrote to much, except, Please take care of Each other!! I care!! And Heidi, Keep up the good work!!!! I will have 16 years day before Thanksgiving!!!

I worked in another department and I only knew Carol from those occasional times I would pass her in the hallway or in the faculty lounge and we would take a few moments to say hi and chat. But I don't think I ever came away from talking to her without feeling a little better for the encounter. She was funny, she was kind, she was smart and I will miss her cheerful presence.

Dr. Carol Batt exuded love and warmth! Regardless of the virtual challenges, she seemed to not be phased and continued to share the love. I wish I had the opportunity to meet such a beautiful soul in person, but in her honor, I will pass the love forward. May you rest peacefully Dr. Batt.

The short time I interacted with Dr. Batts via Zoom or email she was a spunky, funny, and loving person. She enjoyed teaching and made sure we all understood the topic and answered all our questions. She will be truly missed.

From her very first email I could tell that Dr. Batt was a kind and loving person and I would enjoy having her as a teacher. I remember reading her words and smiling at how much positivity and love she put out into the world and for people she didn't even know yet. She embodied the spirit of love for no reason and was extremely inspiring. I keep wondering if I have waited too long to return to school and complete my education, but when she said she came back to school when she was older than me and completed her doctorate, it helped motivate me to keep on going.

I wish I could have gotten to know her better and I hope all of us can take the time to spread the joy and love that she did every time she spoke with us.

I wish that I could have meet Dr. Batt in person. I can tell by the few zoom discussions we had that she was a great facilitator of learning and meaningful discourse. She took care in raising important topics through the documentaries she had us watch and write about during lifespan psychology. She was a kind and loving person who's passion for teaching was evident. My thoughts go out to her family during this time of remembrance.

While I never had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Carol Batt in person I can say that even over an online class program she radiated feelings of love and compassion. Her attitude towards others is one I wish more people shared, myself included. I wish I had gotten the opportunity to interact with her face to face. She seems like she would've been a fun conversationalist. My thoughts go out to her family

Dr. Batt was a very warm-hearted, caring soul. This was my first class with her and I'm sad that I didn't get the chance to get to know her more. She always ended every message with a positive message of love, which always brought a smile to my face. May her heart of gold rest in peace. Much love and condolences to Dr. Batt's family.

I only knew Dr. Batt through the few weeks of this course, but even in that short time her positivity and warmth were palpable, even through the computer screen! It is clear Dr. Batt cared deeply for her students and her profession, and I admire how she took the time to try and connect with us with weekly messages, Zoom calls, and words of encouragement. I also deeply appreciate how she said she loved us at the end of every message. I think Dr. Batt knew some people don't hear that they are loved enough in their lives, so she made it her mission to fix that. I'm thankful and honored to have known her, she will be greatly missed.

This year I had the opportunity to take lifespan Psychology with Professor Batt. In all of my years in school, I had never had a teacher tell her students that she loved them. This spoken word wasn't common in all of my years of school until this class. The power of this word demonstrated by Dr. Batt proved to me that she wasn't like most teachers, and how she cared for every one of her students just like a family member. This message was truly needed as the Covid-19 pandemic had made life in many ways challenging for all of us. I still remember opening up one of her first emails to the class and how she was so excited to start this new quarter with all of us, along with telling us who she was as an individual. When reading this email, I couldn't tell what was more impressive. Was it the fact that she was defying stereotypes about age surrounding education or her genuine kindness? Overall this was an extraordinary teacher, and It was a true pleasure to take her class before I graduate.

Dr. Carol's classes were my favorites during this quarter, when she missed a class I sent her a direct message because I really loved her classes and they were something that I expected a lot during the week, when she was teaching I laughed a lot and I learned. Something that I loved about her, was that despite being an older person, she was very open minded. She talked about topics that she had changed her way of thinking during her life and she always spoke of her vocation as teaching. Despite not having the opportunity to meet her in person, Carol changed my mind and I am grateful that I had the great opportunity to have been her student and to have been part of something that she really loved to do, to teach.
May she rest in peace.

Although I have never had the pleasure to meet Dr. Batt in person, I am so thankful I got to have her as my professor for a period of time. I enjoyed our zooms, she was always so happy to see us and expressed how much she loved us. Her smile would light up the room, and make me feel so welcomed. I feel so bad that we had to see her go, especially so soon, she was so strong fighting to be with us even though she was struggling so much on her own. May she Rest In Peace.❤

Heidi, at no other time in my life did I feel as much of a little girl than when I faced the loss of my parents. The paradox of such incredible grief and phenomenal memories and love can be very confusing, and I want you to know that my ears and my heart are here for you at this time and any others. Much love, Lisa.
