Carol Burke, 58, of Davenport, died Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at her home. Celebration of Life services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, April 30, at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. today with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Genesis Hospice Care of VNA.
Carol was born May 6, 1946, in Davenport, to Richard "Dick" and Gladys (Brinckschroeder) Brune. She married Ron Burke on December 28, 1968, in Davenport. Along with her husband, she owned the Bread Basket bakery, Bettendorf, of which she was the founding person and President. Carol started the company and brought her son and husband into the company in 1995. The Bread Basket was her vision and she was the driving force behind the company until the past year, when illness would not let her work every day. Prior to founding the company, she had worked at two different State Farm offices and was a receptionist with a local attorney firm.
Carol was interested in helping the community and giving back to the community. She joined several organizations to help other young women get ahead in the world. A 10-year member of Davenport Jaycee-ettes (1976-1986), she served as its President for the 1980-1981 term. In 1981, she joined the Miss Scott County Pageant organization, and during her five years with the board she held many offices, including serving as its Executive Director, 1984-1986. She joined the Miss Iowa Pageant board in 1986 and was elected President for 1988-1991 during her six years with the Pageant. In 1989, she joined the Davenport Jaycee Foundation board, on which she served nine years, serving as President in 1996. She also co-produced the Bridal Expo.show every year for 20 years, 1985-2005.
Survivors include her husband, Ron, of Davenport; sons, Scot (Cheryl) Burke, of Bettendorf, and Don (Faby) Burke, of Davenport; three grandchildren; her mother, Gladys Brune, of Bettendorf; sisters, Bonnie Lybeck, of Bettendorf, Elaine Hankins, of Dallas, Texas, Yvonne Brune, of Des Moines, Iowa, Sheila Strand, of McLean, Virginia, and Brenda Polk, of Dallas, Texas; and brothers, Bruce Brune, of O'Fallon, Illinois, and Brett Brune, of West Hollywood, California. She was preceded in death by her father.

I remember Carol as a loving and caring person. During the time that I knew her personally, she was a very good friend of my wife and I. I'm certain that she will be sorely missed by her husband, Ron, and family. As the Jaycee creed says, "We believe that faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life" and I know that the family will need that faith in this hour of remembrance, and that Carol exemplified its meaning.

Good bye, Carol.

My condolences to the family. My parents, Tom and Mary Atzen shared the news with me today and it made my heart sad. I have the best memories of Carol especially at our family gatherings at Thanksgiving. I feel blessed knowing I had the opportuntiy to know Carol.

Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.
