Carol Clough Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 25, 2012.
Carol R. Clough, 67, of Cape Elizabeth, ME, formerly of Rockland, ME, passed away in the early morning hours on August 23, 2012 with her husband, Fred, by her side. She was born February 8, 1945 in Waterville, ME to Charles and Mabel Rivers and graduated from Cape Elizabeth High School in 1963. She completed her undergraduate degree in Nursing in 1967 at the University of Maine Orono and was married in August 1967 after a five year courtship with Fred that began in July 1962. After marrying, they spent three wonderful years in England where their son Fred IV was born in 1969. After moving to California, their son Andrew was born in 1971. After returning to Maine for a time, she moved with her family to Georgetown, MA in 1979 where she spent some of the best years of her life over the next 11 years raising her family. In 1990, she and Fred returned to Maine and built a home on Dodge Mountain in Rockland, ME. In the mid 1990's, she returned to the University of Maine Orono and completed her Masters in Nursing in 1997, thereafter becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner, a position she held at several locations until she retired from active duty in 2011. In 2012, she and Fred made the decision to return home to Cape Elizabeth where she had grown up and met Fred. They had recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary and 50 years of being together.

Carol spent her life caring for and about others. She touched the lives of everyone she met through her kindness and had an enthusiasm about life that made her fun to be around. She knew how to laugh and did so often. She was a realist who embraced life. She made time for the people most important to her and gave them the rare gift of undivided attention and love. She took pride in her home and making her family and friends feel welcome there. Her ability to create beautiful floral arrangements, set a lovely table, and prepare delicious meals made for memorable holidays. An avid gardener, Carol loved flowers, creating and maintaining gardens that rivaled the view beyond on Dodge Mountain. She not only tended to her gardens at home, but explored the geography of the globe. In addition to sailing most of the Maine Coast on a boat named Windigo, she traveled extensively abroad with Fred to Iceland, Norway, France, Argentina and England and also with her grade school friends exploring Italy and Ireland.

She always put the needs of others before her own and had the very special gift of being able to convey the love and emotion she was feeling in a fierce yet warm hug while still taking away some of the pain one was feeling, if necessary. Those who knew Carol will not be able to forget her for she left an indelible impression.

In addition to her numerous professional accomplishments, she was a member of the Rockland Golf Ladies League with not one, but two holes-in-one to her name. She was a master knitter, loved movies and knew the occasional Bloomin' Onion was good for the soul.

She is survived by her husband Fred A Clough III of Cape Elizabeth, ME; son Fred A Clough IV and his wife Deborah L Clough of Barrington, NH and son Andrew C Clough of Olso, Norway; grand-daughters Emma Bakke Clough and Julia Bakke Clough, also of Oslo, Norway; grandsons Cameron A King and Samuel E Clough, both of Barrington, NH; brothers-in-law Jeffory Clough of Rockland, ME, Scott Clough of Litchfield, ME and David Clough and his wife Sachiko Clough of Rockland, ME; sisters-in-law Joyce Rivers of Brooklyn, CT and Kate Clough of Rumford, ME; nieces Miyoko Taniguchi and Mamiko Taniguchi both of Manhattan, NY, Mikaela Clough of Las Vegas, NV and Karen Campbell of Garner, NC; nephews Ian Clough of Portland, ME and Kotoro Taniguchi of Boston, MA and many friends.

She was predeceased by her father and mother, Charles and Mabel Rivers, brother Charles (Skip) Rivers, father-in-law Fred A Clough Jr, mother-in-law Josephine Clough, sister-in-law Becky Clough and nephew Mark Rivers.

There are no visitation hours scheduled. Friends and family are invited to a memorial service at 2pm on Saturday, September 1 at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home 199 Woodford St. Portland, Maine with Pastor Jon Twitchell officiating. A private interment will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Cape Elizabeth. On-Line Condolences can be made to the family at www.jonesrichandhutchins.com.

You brightened our lives, even though you had a short 67 years, yet you indelibly stamped your mark on this world. After many years of taking care of your family, the love you leave behind cannot be broken by your passing. It is said that as one person you may not be able to change the world, but you certainly can change the world of one person. And you've far exceeded that goal having created a life of your choosing, one with no regrets.

To Brother Fred and the extended Clough family. I was informed of Carol's death through mutual friends and was most distressed to learn of it. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you in this time, and we hope you will take comfort knowing she is in a better place. There, flowers have no seasons.

I have known you a long, long time.
I am awakened to your sweet Joy by the knock of this sad, sad pain
In saying good bye Dear Friend:

Indelible is your backbone, the laughter that cheapens winter choir bells;
Your wit, the wisdom that embarrasses disaster & floods to recede
With unequivocal pleasure!
Giving to others heroically,
To have simply,
Loving to hold.

A long, long time Dear Friend:
I want to silence your passing in spite of echoes in repercussion,
"Too soon...too soon!"
You say, "Soon enough!" And then that bloom of laughter--
Opens my heart to this heat of sorrow and awe of your magic.

I am awakened to your sweet Joy by the knock of this sad, sad pain
In saying good bye.
My deepest sorrow holds hands with the Clough Family and
All of us who have had the
Honor and Gift of knowing
Dear Carol...

Enthusiastic, quick-witted, welcoming, gracious, sharing a glass of Kendall Jackson, keeping love in priority: husband, family, friends, her garden ... those are some of what I will store as "forever memories". I am thankful for the times we shared.

We will always hold dear the special memories of our times spent together at West Point, as well as the wonderful "just us " visits that we enjoyed through the years. The bonds of friendship which grew from sharing that part of our sons' lives will remain in our hearts forever. Carol had a way of making everyone feel that he or she was the very person she wanted to see---it was her gift to everyone she knew.We will truly miss our dear friend. How fortunate we are that she filled so many lives with her warmth, radiance and love.

Fred and Family,
My heart is so saddened by the shocking news of the passing of this very special lady. I had the pleasure of working with Carol for several yrs, and have many fond memories. When I retired in 2005 Carol made me a beautiful Tussie Mussie. All of the flowers were from her own garden dried and carefully arranged. A card was attached to the vase explaining what attribute was represented by each flower. This vase of flowers and Carol's thoughtfulness meant so very much to me,it sits on a shelf in my kitchen. Carol and I worked many late nights together, she never failed to say "Thank You dear lady for staying late with me." My turn to say "Thank You Dear Lady! I'll never forget you.

Carol will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered as an incredibly wise, active, vibrant and fun loving person who would brighten any room by her presence. Knowing Carol, I believe that she would want those of us who knew and loved her to put aside our sorrow over her passing and hug our spouses, friends, kids, grandchildren, parents and siblings in the spirit of joy and light by which she lived her beautiful life. Goodbye, Dear Friend. Rest in peace.

Fred and Family,
I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I enjoyed many hours with Carol at work. She truly was the most wonderful person I know, it did not matter how busy she was, she always would make time if you needed to talk, cry or just ask her a question. I will never forget hearing her yell for someone in the office and you could be sure it was to due with the computer. Carol you will be missed by so many people.

I was lucky enough to have Carol in my life the last fifteen years. She was my faithful Nurse Practitioner colleague and a very dear friend. When I think of her I am filled with light and laughter. Carol's smile and infectious laugh were some of her greatest attributes. But it was the goodness of her heart that I will treasure most. Thanks Carol for all the laughs, glasses of wine, delicious meals and great trips to Boston. But mostly, thank you for being an inspiration to me as an NP, friend, wife and mother. I will miss you deeply.

I was a classmate of Carol's at the Uof M in nursing. I remember Carol as fun loving and always ready for a laugh. We worked hard and were always looking for a fourth for bridge. It seems impossible that we are starting to lose classmates..we don't seem old enough for this! There were only 11 of us that graduated from the School of Nursing that year and we had become close. Even though we did not keep in touch I still remember each and every one...it is hard to let one of us go. My thoughts go out to all of you. Gwen Smith Willard, class of '67.

Carol and I spent many a happy day flying around on our bikes in C.E. and making sure that we knew where our current heart throbs were! Lots of fun and many laughs...I am certain that she became a very special adult who touched many lives. My best to you and your family. Judy Jones Orlandi

I had the pleasure of meeting Carol only once but felt I knew her much longer because that's the way she made people feel....as if they were a long lost friend. In fact, my husband and I had just met her and she was inviting us to stop in and stay over on our planned trip to Mt. Desert Island the following Spring! That one evening left an indelible impression - warm, sincere, effusive, genuine, full of love and light. Easy to see why she was like the center of the universe for her loved ones. My deepest compassion and sympathy for your loss.
