Carol Cottrill Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 3, 2017.
COTTRILL Dr. Carol Jean Malott, age 80, gently passed on September 2, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her husband of 39 years, J.Thomas Rolfes, who has been her faithful companion. Her children John Cottrill of Franklin, OH; Aaron Cottrill (decd.) of Lexington, KY; Elgin Cottrill of Richmond, KY; Crystal Dawn Cottrill (decd.) of Cincinnati, OH; KY, Hope Cottrill of Lexington, KY; Carl Auxier (decd.) of Salyersville, KY, Benjamin Cottrill of Lexington, KY; Joseph Rolfes of Lexington, KY; Megan Rolfes of Fremont, CA and Virginia Miller (decd.) of Lexington, KY are her legacy. Her grandchildren held a special place in her heart including Asha and Kiran Ari; Moira, Liam, and Connor Rolfes; and Aven Cottrill. Carol was known for her compassionate lifelong care of children. She was one of 3 women in her medical school class, was the only pediatric cardiology fellow to ever complete training at UK Medical Center, and served as the director of the Pediatric ICU at UKMC for 16 years. She and Tom cared for over twenty foster children through the years including housing families from foreign countries while their children awaited surgery. Service was a way of life and Carol touched many people through her Catholic devotion and medical missions. Despite physical challenges, she continued to work until recently, authored many papers, and served as an educator and mentor to those around her. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends and her countless patients and their parents for whom she was always a source of strength in trying times. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Kentucky Children's Hospital at UKMC. Visitation will be held at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home 3421 Harrodsburg Rd, Lexington KY 40513 ON Sept 7, 2017 from 5 to 9 PM. Funeral Mass time will be announced later this week.

Dr Cottrill was my baby's doctor she found out Clifford Cleon Reid Jr was born with Primary pulmonary hypertension with a brown pigmentation in his lungs he had lung of a 90 yr old Man. And Dr Cottrill put Clifford Cleon Reid Jr in the world genius book of records first baby to be born with this sickness like he had. Dr Cottrill was a wonderful loving doctors and when my baby passed she told me to tell the nurse to call her before he passed and she was there with us when little Clifford passed away. We loved her she told us step by step what little Clifford body would do when his lungs couldn't supply his body with oxygen. I'm so sorry for the families loss if I'd known Dr Cottrill passed away we would have come to her funeral. God Gained an Angle. Sincerely Clifford and Elaine Reid Clifford Cleon Reid Jr February 20 1989 - June 13 1989. You can look him up in the Medical Records

I saw Dr. Cottrill´s name in a database today, and I came here to share about my family´s experience with her. She treated my daughter when she was small, and during our first visit, when I told her she had also treated my uncle decades ago and that I´d noticed his picture on her board in the lobby, she remembered him well and asked after my grandmother, easily remembering her name, where they were from, and details about them. She was sad to know they had both passed away. It was very obvious she had cared about them personally.

She was such a sweet and kind woman. I will never forget her telling me not to worry about what kind of syndrome my daughter has because knowing might make me assume she had certain limits, and that I should treat her like she didn´t have any. Wise words from an angel on Earth. I was glad we were able to be discharged from her care, but sad we didn´t get to spend more time getting to know her.

I hope her family and friends are comforted to know how deeply she touched the lives and hearts of everyone she helped. She lives on in the hearts of countless others.

Although I never met Dr. Cottrill in person, I did speak with her on occasion about patients that she referred to C.S. Mott Children's Hospital at University of Michigan. She was always helpful and concerned - clearly a treasure to her patients and respected by her colleagues. She will be missed...

I have a feeling she is riding her beautiful horse in Heaven. It was an honor to have Dr. Carol on our medical board for Angel heart farm! Her face would light up like fireworks as she talked about the children she loved and cared for! Compassion is one thing but love trumps all! She had a lot of love

I had the pleasure of working with, learning from and being in awe of this inspiring woman not once, but twice in my career as a NICU/PICU nurse. Her clinical expertise was only exceeded by her compassion and strength. We were all better nurses and doctors for having the example she set. She lived well and touched so many. Quite a legacy, Carol Cottrill. Rest In Peace, you will be missed.

Dr. Cottrill will always hold a very special place in our hearts! During my infant son's time in the NICU, we were told at one point he had "heart failure". Dr Cottrill gently explained that someone used outdated terminology and that our son was doing well, his condition was very common, and what we could expect as far as monitoring and likely outcome. We went from feeling our lowest to being very confident and optimistic. Dr. Cottrill continued monitoring him periodically after he was released from the hospital and recently our son turned 1! He is in great health and is the absolute light of our lives! We owe that in large part to Dr Cottrill's wonderful care (and wonderful NICU staff too) and feel so grateful that we had her as our son's doctor. We were incredibly sad to learn of her passing from our pediatrician, she will be greatly missed by all the lives she touched :( I personally found the story of her pursuit of her career late in life and many accomplishments powerfully inspiring!

Dr. C, there is no debating you have earned your place among the angels. You are the reason I, and many others, am alive today. You became a part of my family when you took me as a patient when I was 3 days old, now at 36 I have had the pleasure of sharing my life with you. Your family became my family as we talked about how so very proud you were of each of them. You made each appointment more like a mini family reunion. You will always be a part of my heart. For it beats because of you.

Our family is absolutely devastated by this news. Dr Cotrrill has taken wonderful care of our son his whole life (23 years) and is the absolute best physician I have ever met . I don't know what our family will do without her in our lives. Me and Nate always looked forward to driving to Lexington to see her every 6 months. We will continue to pray for her family as well as all the kiddos she has taken care because I know they are just as heartbroken as we are .. we love you Dr. C. and will miss you terribly .

I was just telling my husband that I needed to schedule my appointment for Dr. Cottrill. I thought she might have retired since my appointment 3 years ago. My heart sank as I learned of her passing. I met her in May of 2000. I was 3 months pregnant with my daughter (Sarah). My visit with her was due to the Pulmonary Stenosis I was diagnosed with as a baby in 1966. It had gotten worse through the years and was told I would not be able to carry my baby full term. Dr Cottrill performed balloon surgery on my pulmonary valve to try and reopen the valve, due to at the time the only other option being termination of the pregnancy. Dr Cottrill was determined that the termination was not going to be my only other option, but the balloon did not work due to to much scar tissue around the valve. She introduced me to a surgeon (Dr Sally) who performed open heart surgery on me at 3 months pregnant. She and Dr Sally saved mine and Sarah's life. My baby girl will be 17 this year. I absolutely loved this woman I looked forward to my visits with her. She will be deeply missed. RIP Dr Cottrill.

Heartbroken to learn of the death of our beloved Dr.Cottrill. My daughter was born with a heart defect and DR. Cottrill was her doctor from the day she was born for 37 years. My daughter had an appointment with her on Sept.19th. Dr. Cottrill was absolutely the BEST doctor ever. I trusted her completely. We always looked forward to seeing her every year. She called us old friends. She was most certainly our friend. She will be greatly missed.

I remember one time at the Newman Center Dr. Cottrill gave the "guest sermon". It was about the loaves and fishes. She said she pictured it that the mothers in the crowd would have traveled with breads or snacks to help feed their own children and family. And then everyone just shared. What a wonderful, talented, caring woman. So sorry for your loss.

As a physician trained at UK there are physician-mentors who modeled the ethic of service to their patients. Dr. Cottrill was at the top of this list. Many good things will be said about her life and lifelong contribution to the children of the Commonwealth, but for me her contribution will be her example of a life as a physician serving others. Our profession and the underpinning ethos that drives our behavior as physicians is built on the leadership and service of Dr. Cottrill. Her legacy will be felt for generations in her student's practice of service to their patients. Thank you for your example and service.

A truly amazing woman, doctor and mother, I have known Dr Cottrill since my days as an ICU nurse at University of Kentucky Medical Center in the mid 19 70's. I was taken by her intelligence, her compassion and her work ethic from the first. Through my career I had many opportunities to work with her with my pregnant patients as once a patient of Dr Cottrill you were always her kid! Even as an older woman, being wheelchair bound didn't slow her roll and she continued to care for her kids! Blessed with a truly incredible husband and family she was able to continue doing what she excelled at doing. I can see her now still the dynamo she always was taking care of her kids for eternity. May God continue to bless her beautiful family.

Dr. C comforted my whole family as we worried about the heart diagnosis my daughter, Savannah, had received. She was there with prayer and wisdom and gave us hope. Even long after she stopped seeing patients as often, and mostly consulted with her staff, she still cared enough to make sure we knew everything. My daughter is perfect now and has undergone the surgery needed to make her repairs. You were truly a gift to us.... our Angel here on Earth. Your ♥ and compassion will be greatly missed.
