Carol Dan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 7 to Jan. 8, 2023.
August 17, 1934 - October 28, 2022 Miami Beach, FL ? Carol May Dan passed away peacefully at home at the age of 88. She was born to Jules 'Chuck' Coen and May Litwin Coen and grew up in Clifton, NJ, where she attended high school. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Speech Pathology at the University of Vermont, where she met her future husband and love of her life, Lewis R. Dan. At UVM, she joined the Tri Delta sorority, forging lifelong friendships and attending many sorority reunions over the years. Carol and Lewis were married after graduating and lived in Burlington, VT, while he attended Medical School. After her husband carried out his military service obligations at Maxwell Air Force base in Montgomery, AL, they moved to Miami Shores, FL, where Carol served turns as president of the Miami Shores Elementary PTA while her three children attended the school.

Always in touch with her creativity, Carol was an accomplished artist, having taken art classes throughout her life, including courses toward a Master's degree in Art History. When Miami Beach took the first steps towards revitalizing Lincoln Road Mall, Carol's artwork submissions qualified her to rent space in a dedicated artist studio/enclave where she painted for many years. She leaves behind a trove of beautiful works of art in a variety of media. She shared her knowledge of and love for art while volunteering as a docent at the Lowe Art Museum.

Her fondness for the scenery and climate of the Northeast prompted them to summer in Stockbridge, MA, for decades, where they attended weekly concerts at Tanglewood and enjoyed partaking in the numerous cultural offerings in the area.

Carol often reminisced about the family's motorhome summer vacations that she and her husband carefully planned out. Over the years, as the family explored the US and Canada, she documented each trip with cherished photo albums, adding humorous and educational commentary to each picture. The family joked that they never drove past a museum without visiting it!

She was an avid reader and intellectually curious, keeping up with news on all topics and current events, ably engaging family and friends in lively discussions until her last days.

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, she was married to her loving husband Lewis for 66 years who preceded her in death, as did her son Steven. She is survived by her son Brian (Cecilia), daughter Lorraine, daughter-in-law Sandra, and grandchildren Cleo, Adrian, Jaret and Reese. Carol will be remembered at a private graveside service.
