It is with deep sadness that we share the unexpected passing of Carol Dow on November 19, 2023, at the age of 77.
Despite grappling with health challenges throughout her life, Carol approached each day with unwavering joy and optimism. A tenacious soul, she fought relentlessly for a sense of normalcy, a goal she remarkably surpassed in the past two years. During this period, she wholeheartedly embraced the happiness and well-being she unquestionably deserved.
Carol spent weekdays at Cascades of Tucson engaging in exercise classes, reigniting her passion and talent for watercolor painting, cultivating meaningful friendships, and being the life of the many parties she attended! Her infectious kindness and warm smile endeared her to both fellow residents and staff. Weekends were cherished moments spent with her beloved family at home. Never a dull moment, Carol's sharp wit and humor were only matched by the compassion and care she generously shared with those she loved and who loved her immeasurably.
Carol's life-long passion was Education and pursuing educational opportunities, not only for the multitude of lives she enriched as an educator and through her altruism, but also for herself. For two decades, Carol was a beloved English teacher at Saguaro High School, keeping touch with many former students. After receiving her Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from the U of A, she assumed the role of Assistant Principal at Catalina and Santa Rita High Schools. Although her pursuit of a Doctoral degree was curtailed by breast cancer (which she conquered) she found other ways to continue contributing to educational initiatives after her retirement. As a Rodel Foundation liaison, she worked with elementary students to enhance math proficiency. Carol was also actively involved with AAUW (American Association of University Women), advocating for gender equity and economic security by empowering girls and women through educational and leadership opportunities, and political visibility. Many of her efforts helped to raise thousands of dollars in scholarships for marginalized women returning to college, specifically The Virginia Palmer Memorial Scholarship. She held various roles within AAUW Tucson for 10 years, serving two years as President, 2011-2013.
Carol's legacy transcends her numerous accomplishments, reaching far into the lives she touched through her altruism, unwavering love for her family, and the sheer fortune of getting to spend time with her. She is survived by her sister Linda, niece Jennifer, Linda's life partner Eddie, and a host of friends and relatives.
Carol's absence will be deeply felt, yet the lasting imprint of her tenacious spirit and beaming smile will be always present.
