Carol Mayes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 26, 2023.
Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend passed away peacefully at her home with her family by her side on Tuesday, July 11, 2023. She was 84 years old.

The youngest of eight children, Carol Faye Mayes was born in Bay City, Michigan to the late Griffin and Esther (Carvey) French.

She met her best friend and the love of her life, Frederick Mayes in 1969 and they married in 1977.

Carol worked at General Motors for 18 years. She and Fred treasured time spent with family and friends camping in Maine, visiting Texas and England, vacationing in Hawaii and the occasional ocean cruise. While living in Harrison she loved kayaking in the early morning to see the loons. She never missed watching the Kentucky Derby and rooted for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

A stubborn determination, strong sense of humor, and her fur babies saw her through many tribulations. She was known for her quick smile, abundance of love and beautiful soul.

Carol is remembered with love by her children: Mark Newvine, Hillary (Dean) Norfleet, Daniel (Marie) Mayes and Roberta Newvine; grandchildren: Brandon Norfleet, Charlotte (Kyle) Zepp, Tyler (Danielle) Norfleet, Ian Mayes, Amanda (Nick) Papa, Kristin (Wes) Pedersen and Jordan Marth; and 3 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is special niece and friend, Deanne Turek.

Carol was preceded in death by sisters Evelyn (Morris) Monville and Rosalyn (Virgil) Warczynski; brothers Franklin (Dorothy), William (Elaine), Louis, Donald and Lyle French.

A celebration of life is planned for September 16.
