Carol McCollister Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 3, 2024.
Carol Ann McCollister, aged 78, passed into her next life at home on August 15, 2024, in San Rafael, CA. Carol had fought valiantly in the two years since diagnosis of stage #4 anal cancer.

Born on November 11, 1945, in Coffeeville, KS, Carol led a life marked by intelligence, empathy, grace, an unwavering sense of practical wisdom and a delicious sense of humor. She had a positive impact on everyone she encountered. Her qualities made her not only a beloved figure in her personal circles, but also a respected professional in the finance sector.

Carol graduated from Midland High School in Michigan and furthered her education at Michigan State University and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, earning a B.A. in Psychology. She later continued her studies at the University of California at Berkeley where she was awarded an MBA in Finance. Her academic background paved the way for a distinguished career in finance, where she held significant roles at IMF Financial Corporation, Executive Investment Advisors, and Marin Wealth Advisors, contributing profoundly to each organization.

She is survived by her husband John; her brother Roger; sister Janet; niece Meghan; nephew Michael; stepson John Jr.; stepdaughter Kris; daughter-in-law Leann; four amazingly talented granddaughters; a small-but-closely-connected family of cousins; and a huge "posse" of intimate long-term friends. Carol's life was a beacon of guidance and support to her family and friends, embodying a spirit of generosity and understanding that will be dearly missed.

A small, informal gathering of family, colleagues and closest friends to celebrate Carol's life is scheduled for September 19, 2024, coinciding with what would have been her 32nd wedding anniversary. Further details will be provided closer to the date.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Carol's memory through a charitable donation are directed to The American Cancer Society, Homeward Bound of Marin County or Anthem Church of San Rafael. However, she would not want anyone to feel obligated to do so. Carol's absence will be felt intensely ... and so will her continued presence.

I just donated to one of her listed charities, Homeward Bound.
"Homeward Bound assists individuals finding their voice and realizing their full potential. It provides opportunities for folks to develop skills in the culinary arts, landscape maintenance, janitorial maintenance, as well as computer skills and life management skills. It truly is a joy to observe clients who grow into, or return to being, productive, contributing members of society."

It´s hard to find any words that are different than what everyone else has said. I would just repeat every one of them. Carol and I saw each other once a week for an outing of some sort for about 15 years. If we didn´t actually go somewhere, we would talk on the phone, or on their deck. We did so many things together that it is impossible to get through a day without something reminding me of her.

Her smile would light up the room from the inside out. Her gentle strength and enormous heart healed any wound you shared with her. She was my hero. I hope that someday I can stand in her shadow. I loved her more than I can ever say as my friend, sister, confidant, guide and rock. I love you, Carol, always and forever. Rest my dear sister, rest.

What comes to mind when thinking of Carol is her calm demeanor, infectious smile, and unflappable spirit. Her dedication to helping others never wavered. She was always genuine, smart, and steady. I will carry her steadfast and grounded spirit in my heart.

Carol was a life long family friend to the Goodwins. She always had my dad's back and supported him in endless ways. She was a warm, funny, sharp, reliable and radiant person in our lives as long as I can remember. She will be missed very much. Our hearts go out to John and her family during this time.

My first memory of Carol was in 1975 when she overheard "Saginaw" in a SF conversation. Soon we discovered we had grown up in the same area, attended the same college, and moved to New York then California, at the same time.
Like sisters from different mothers, we´ve shared so many wonderful times, loves, discoveries, and life´s adventures, she is terribly missed already.
Carol´s poise, wisdom, and support cannot be replaced.
