Caroline W. Hutchison

Caroline W. Hutchison February 9, 1936 August 21, 2018 Caroline W. "Betsy" Hutchison, 82, Hollidaysburg, passed away Tuesday in Charlottesville, Va. She was born in Bellefonte, daughter of the late Samuel R. and Caroline (McClure) Waite. Betsy attended Bellefonte Elementary and High School, before receiving her BA in Elementary Education from The Pennsylvania State University. Betsy met her husband William W. "Bill" Hutchison in junior high school where he professed his love to her on their second date. The cheerleader and football player from rival high schools married June 28, 1958, in Bellefonte and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in June. Betsy's devotion to children was clear through her work teaching elementary students, serving on the Altoona Recreation Commission and instituting the "must play rule", fitting children with shoes at Stride Right Bootery, and coaching the Altoona YMCA swim team (including two state champions). She also served for years as the treasurer of the Juniata Presbyterian Church. Betsy loved vacationing at the beach with her family. She had a passion for the performing arts and a great sense of style. Betsy is survived by her loving husband and high school sweetheart, William Hutchison, of Hollidaysburg; her sister Madelon Rial, of Las Vegas, Nev.; three children Elizabeth Estep, of Charlottesville, Va., Jennifer Hutchison, of Philadelphia, William Hutchison, of Chester, N.J.; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother James A. Waite. Friends will be received from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, August 26, 2018, at Mauk and Yates Funeral Home, Inc., Altoona. A celebration of Betsy's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 27, 2018, at Juniata Presbyterian Church, with Janet Kephart officiating. Interment at Centre County Memorial Park in State College.
