Carolyn Gilfillan

BLOOMFIELD — Carolyn Sondrol was born in Clear Lake on Oct. 14, 1910, at the home of her grandmother.She is the daughter of Thorkel Einor Sondrol and Frances Haynes Sondrol, who preceded her in death. She had one sibling, a brother, Thorkel Sondrol Jr., who preceded her in death. Her son, Charles D. Gilfillan, died in 2006.Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Carol Ann Gilfillan Harl of Columbia, Mo.; daughter-in-law, Marcia Anderson Gilfillan of Seattle, Wash.; grandchildren Karin Harl Pestle and Douglas Harl, both of Columbia, Stefanie Harl Falge of Bentonville, Ark., and Gretchen Harl of Atlanta, Ga.; great-grandchildren Jacob and Jennifer Pestle, Rebecca, Catherine and Brian Falge, and Nicholas, Madeline and Emily Harl.Carolyn graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1928; she went on to graduate in 1933 from the University of Iowa in Iowa City with a B.S. in commerce. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi.In 1933, she married Edwin O. Gilfillan on the lakeshore of her parents' home in Clear Lake. They moved to Detroit, Mich., where Edwin completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Henry Ford Hospital.In the mid-1930s, the couple moved to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., where Edwin joined the Sault Polyclinic. Carolyn and her children spent the war years in Clear Lake with her parents while Edwin served in the Pacific Arena with the 37th Division of the U.S. Army.In 1951, the couple relocated to Bloomfield, where Edwin joined four of his brothers at The Gilfillan Clinic.In 1971, the couple retired and moved to Englewood, Fla.In 2001, Carolyn moved to Columbia, Mo., where she lived for several years at The Terrace and with her daughter. For more than 50 years, Carolyn was member of P.E.O. Chapter B. She was active in 20th Century Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, Campfire Girls and Eastern Star.Throughout her life, Carolyn did extensive knitting and needle point. She particularly enjoyed being around the water including swimming, boating, fishing and beach combing with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed visiting and fishing with her son Charles and his wife Marcia in Seattle and the San Juan Islands. In later years, she enjoyed spending time with great-grandchildren and traveling extensively with her daughter and went on several Elderhostel trips to locations such as Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota, New York and Canada.Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield, Iowa, with John Small officiating.
