Carolyn Story Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 18, 2025.
Carolyn Louise Broadaway Story, age 83, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones, on September 14, 2025, in Watertown, Tennessee. Born on January 14, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee, Carolyn lived a life marked by devotion to her family, faith, and community.

A proud graduate of Messick High School in Memphis, class of 1960, Carolyn began her professional journey with South Central Bell-now known as AT&T-where she started as a switchboard operator and rose through the ranks to customer service. Her dedication and work ethic were evident throughout her career until her retirement.

Carolyn was a devoted mother to her four children: Carol Morris Earle (Jim) of Watertown, TN; Kathy Pounders (Ricky) of Olive Branch, MS; Bonita Story Elam (William) of Olive Branch, MS; and Shane Dion Story of Collierville, TN. She also leaves behind her beloved brother Roger Kenneth Broadaway of Austin, TX and sister-in-law Sandy Carter of Memphis, TN.

Her legacy continues through the generations she nurtured and loved deeply: 15 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Though she experienced the sorrowful loss of her husband Eugene Allen Story, granddaughter April Nicole McEwen, and great-granddaughter Autumn Elizabeth McEwen during her lifetime, Carolyn's enduring strength and faith carried her forward.

Carolyn's life was enriched by many passions. She found joy in embroidery and beading-crafts that reflected both patience and creativity. A woman of deep spiritual conviction, she read the Bible daily along with her spiritual devotionals. She often said that "God will not put more on you than He thought you could handle," a testament to the strength she drew from her faith. She cherished visits from Bro. Mike Burns from First Baptist Church in Watertown and found peace in quiet moments watching hummingbirds flutter outside her window while sipping coffee and chatting with her brother.

Beyond family and faith, Carolyn had a vibrant social life rooted in music and dance. From 1958 to 1960 she served in the Civil Air Patrol-a reflection of her early commitment to service. Later in life she became an active member of the Memphis Bop Club (MBC), where she served as Membership Chairwoman for nine years (2002-2010). In recognition of her contributions to the dance community, she was named MBC Member of the Year in 2002 and inducted into the National Fast Dance Association (NFDA) Hall of Fame in Florida in 2005. She also represented MBC as their NFDA Representative in both 2006 and 2007-years she fondly referred to as "the good ole days."

Carolyn was known for being loving and nurturing-a caregiver at heart who touched many lives with kindness and compassion. Her warmth left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to know her.

A celebration of Carolyn's life will be held in Austin, TX in November and a small private graveside at the Veterans Cemetery in Memphis, TN in October

Memaw, I will always cherish the little moments we shared. I loved stopping by unexpectedly just to sit and talk about our day. One of my core childhood memories is sneaking into your house through the doggy door just to steal an Oreo from your cookie jar. You were always there for me - from taking me to my sporting events, to teaching me how to drive (even a stick shift!). Thank you for the love, patience, and countless memories. You´ll always be in my heart.

I only met Carolyn a very few times. She struck me as a very strong southern lady. I know she gave much love to her family and friends. I would have liked to have known her better. Carolyn, I hope there is ribbon candy to enjoy in Heaven!

So sorry, but I know she is in a better place. I started out knowing Carolyn and Allen came to my salon and were my customers and friends. After Allen passed, Carolyn stopped coming, but I ran into her getting gas one day and invited her to the Bop Club. The rest is history! She was a special lady! Prayers for all the family

Mom sure lived life to the fullest. She cared deeply and loved hard. She was a caring, loving lady. I miss her so much already. Don´t know what I will do with out her.
