Cass Wheeler Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 25, 2025.
Austin - Few people get to say they changed the world. Cass Wheeler earned it.

As CEO of the American Heart Association (1998-2008), he didn't just lead, he revolutionized. Over his 35-year tenure at The AHA, he transformed the fight against heart disease and stroke through structural change, big goals, and personal conviction.

He shifted the organization's influence toward addressing how everyday environments - from food systems to policy - shape the country's leading cause of death. This work brought him to Capitol Hill, where he spent significant time turning science into public policy.

Cass played a key role in the Big Tobacco settlement, which led to limits on youth advertising and public smoking - catalyzing nationwide bans and dramatic drops in smoking rates.

He also launched the Alliance for a Healthier Generation with President Bill Clinton, which has brought healthy options to more than 31 million kids. He pioneered Go Red for Women, partnering with for-profit retailers like Macy's to reach women directly, redefining nonprofit marketing and women's cardiovascular health.

Marion Cassaday "Cass" Wheeler was born in Austin on July 13, 1940 to Marion Edwin Wheeler (Skip) and Hazel Delle Cassaday (Honey). He graduated from Arlington Heights High School in 1958. He fulfilled his service in the Air Force Reserve from 1959 to 1965, standing ready though not called to active duty. In 1964 he graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. He died peacefully in Austin, Texas on June 19, 2025. Though his work reached millions, he stayed deeply connected to his roots.

Cass Wheeler's heartbeat echoes in schools, hospitals, homes, and public places across the country, where millions of lives are protected.

He is survived by children Kevin and Kristen Wheeler, grandchildren Trinity and Cash Wheeler, and stepchildren Austin Schonfeld and Chloe Schonfeld Barbul. The family is planning a Celebration of Life and asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the American Heart Association.
