Catherine passed away peacefully at home on April 29, 2018. A beautiful and strong woman has left our lives but not our hearts. Catherine was born on July 25, 1955, in Calgary, AB. Following her undergraduate studies at the University of Calgary, Catherine made a name for herself as a journalist with the Medicine Hat News and the Calgary Herald. She returned to the U of C in the Faculty of Law and earned a law degree in 1985. She became a proud member of the Law Society of Alberta in 1986. Catherine practiced law in Calgary for many years. Lately, she served as a Board Member with the Calgary Subdivision and Appeal Board. She was so pleased to be able to have an impact on planning and development matters in the city she loved living in. Catherine loved wild places and, in particular, the mountains and the West Coast. She was always game for a ski, a hike, a camping trip and beach combing. A natural explorer, she was always curious about what was over the next hill. Catherine was a devoted mother and wife. Mourning her passing are her husband, Kurt Stilwell; her son, Jake; and her daughter, Jesse. Catherine was predeceased by her parents, Noel and Margaret Butlin; and her sister, Sheila Reed. She is survived by her brother, James Butlin, Q.C.; her sisters, Nola Bietz (Brian), and Barbara Havstein (Chris); and many nieces and nephews. Catherine requested that a funeral service not be held.
