Catherine Carpenter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 12, 2023.
Catherine "Cat" Carpenter, age 71, passed away October 8, 2023. She is survived by her daughters Emma Conway (Joe) and Margaret Hermanek, cherished grandson Cooper Conway, and husband Kevin Hermanek, along with her brother David (Diane) Carpenter, niece, nephew, and countless friends. She is preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Ruth (Clifford) Carpenter.

A lifelong creative, Cat loved to perform, happily sharing her voice in jazz combos and annual Christmas caroling for most of her adult life. She showed her love through her many creative pursuits - handmade cards, scrapbooks, beautiful clothes, crafting, and thoughtful entertaining. Cat appreciated design in all its forms from interiors and fashion to typography and advertising. She was a voracious reader, favoring the classic mysteries that she collected. Her Christmas ornament collection was a labor of love, curated across a lifetime of travel, different interests, and special milestones. She will be remembered for her contagious laugh, often prompted by a favorite episode of Frasier, and for her relentless optimism.

There will be a small private gathering in her memory. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to PBS, whose period dramas and mysteries fed her passion for all things British and were a family tradition.

I am saddened by Cat's passing and wish comfort and strength to her family and friends. I met Cat in the late 1970's at Miss Collins Studio where we took voice lessons, as if she needed any. I have nothing but fond memories of her am thankful to have known her.

Chris, Alex, Sara and I have so many memories of spending time together with Cat. We loved hearing Cats beautiful voice when her and Kevin performed together and celebrating Christmas at Cats home with Kevin, Emma and Margaret and our family . Having dinner and playing games. Cat made Saras first dress for her first Christmas 31 years ago. We have it still handing in the closet. May you rest in peace.Cat. You will always be in our hearts. Love, Chris, Debbie, Alex and Sara

As her brother I could write lots of memories here, but here are a few that are top-of-mind, in no particular order: her love of holidays and horse racing. her amazing scrapbooks (she could have made a living creating them), Lake Nipigon and other camping trips with the parents, epic childhood fights (until my arm went through a window), harmonizing Christmas carols on Christmas Eve, her 30th birthday party, Kalooki with (Grandma) Parker, dating (briefly) two of her friends (and attempting to date another), party weekend at Michigan State University (while still in high school). I will miss making more such memories...

Cat was a key player on our online game Junes Journey. She will stay an honorary flamingo, as our team name is Pink lady Flamingos. My deepest condolences may you find peace during these times.

Whenever I would hear an interesting song, whether it was blues, rock or alternative, I could imagine Cat singing her own arrangement of it. I'd call her to discuss and she'd pull it up on her laptop and tell me what she thought. Her voice will forever be in my head. Be at peace mon ami.
