Catherine Feeney Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 15, 2024.
Catherine W. Feeney, a longtime resident of Evanston, IL and more recently Waukegan, IL, passed away peacefully at the home she shared with her family on Saturday, March 9, 2024. She was 83 years old.

Catherine was born on December 5, 1940, to James and Anne (Quinn) Burns, in Glasgow, Scotland. Upon her completion of secondary school, she began work in the public library, a profession she would follow for the rest of her life.

In 1961 she met George Feeney, and they were married on September 2, 1961. Shortly after they married, George traveled to America and once he secured a job and apartment he sent for Catherine. Together, they settled in Evanston, IL and while they initially considered moving back "home" they eventually decided to become US citizens.

Shortly after her arrival, Catherine found employment at Northwestern University Deering Library, the main library at that time. She enjoyed her work in the library as she loved books and reading (especially a good murder mystery). She initially worked part time but eventually moved to full time and worked her way up to become the Assistant Head of Circulation. She saw tremendous growth and change at the library as she was there during the construction of what is now University Library. She retired from Northwestern after many faithful and enjoyable years of service. In her retirement, she spoke fondly of her work and of the many people she had met and worked with.

Having lived the American Dream where hard work and determination paid off, Catherine and George built their dream cabin in Basalt, Colorado, where they would spend part of each year. They also enjoyed travel to Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.

Catherine was preceded in death by George, her devoted husband of 61 years. She is survived by her daughter, Adrianne (Jeff) Elbe and her beloved grandchildren Evelyn, Macklin and Vivian, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00am on Friday, May 3rd at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, located at 806 Ridge Ave., Evanston, IL 60202. Parking is behind the church and rectory and is accessible by the alley just south of the rectory off Ridge.

I gave her a handmade sensory bottle that included sparkly items and objects like books and plastic bible. She smiled, hugged it and then began to cry; she was so happy with the gift.

I am writing this with a heavy heart and full of tears. I started working at Northwestern University in the Fall 1970´s. My first promotion was in the Circulation Department with Catherine Feeney being my supervisor. We worked together for many years. Soft spoken and fast but walker, she was a wonderful person. Every Christmas I would ask her for her shortbread cookie recipe. Well after asking so many times I guess she felt sorry cause my cookies would not come out like hers, so she made them for me. After many years I got to know the whole family. Catherine, George and Adrianne, what a beautiful family.

I will miss you Catherine so much. RIH and remember you are loved by so man. My prayers to you Adrianne.

I worked in the Library Personnel Office before she retired. What comes to mind about Catherine is her beautiful smile, like the one in her pucture, and her soft spoken ways.
My condolences to Catherine's family.

I had the great joy of working with Catherine in the Circulation department of the Northwestern University Library from 1979 until her retirement. She was always positive and had a wicked sense of humor. She brightened up everyone's day. I know that's the kind of thing people write under these circumstances, but with Catherine it was true. I always felt I had an ally in Catherine. I'd occasionally see her with George at a university function. but I didn't ever get to know him. I know they loved getting away to their place near Aspen, Colorado, their home away from home. As these things sometimes go, I was just thinking fondly of Catherine yesterday before getting this sad news today. You will be missed, Catherine. You were one of the good ones.

I knew Catherine when we both worked at the Northwestern University Library in Evanston in the 1970's. Catherine had a wonderful sense of humor and I enjoyed chatting with her at the Circulation desk. When I first met her she had long red hair that came down her back. Once she decided to cut her hair she never went back to haivng long hair. A lovely person that will be missed. -- Vince McCoy
