Catherine Latham Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 4, 2012.
Latham, Catherine Ann

Catherine Ann Latham died unexpectedly at her home in Ithaca, NY on Thursday, January 26th, 2012. Catherine was born on August 31st, 1955 in Somerset, Massachusetts. She is survived by her mother Judith Haman, her sister Patricia (husband, Richard) Tinsley and nieces and nephews. Catherine was predeceased by her beloved husband Jerry Bullis and her sister Liz Haman.

Catherine attended Somerset High School where she received the Betty Crocker award and graduated 10th in her class. After attending Wellsley College Catherine earned her Doctor of Philosophy/Psychology at the University of Colorado, and was licensed to practice as a psychologist in the state of New Yrok.

Catherine worked at Gannett Psychological Services, Cornell University, and at Psychological Services, Ithaca College before beginning her own private practice in Ithaca, New York. While Catherine's first love was psychology, she was also an avid artist.

Catherine was full of creative energy and sold her stamped and collaged greeting cards, journals and artwork through Handwork, Ithaca's Cooperative Craft Store. Catherine was a member of Handwork for 13 years and she will be missed. Catherine loved to express herself through her art, and describes her process as follows:

"Much of my work is about transformation -- both my work as a psychologist and as an artist. Collage is a particularly good example of valuing things that others see as inconsequential, damaged or worthless. Simply by virtue of seeing things in a new light, it is possible to create something of beauty. The process of creating art by combining handmade papers, stamped images, colors and textures fascinates me. I firmly believe that there is a creative force in each one of us. It has been an exciting journey exploring my own creativity. I encourage you to nurture yours."

Some of Catherine's work is still available at Handwork and any proceeds from the sale of her work will be donated to the Tompkins County SPCA. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Catherine's name can be made to the SPCA. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

I traveled with Catherine to Massachusetts, her driving was a tad scary; but we had a great time! I miss her laugh❤.

Two years seems impossible, Catherine. I know you are in a far better place now, and our world is brighter because you were here. I treasure the years we shared at Ithaca College...and all the laughs and affection. Love to you...

Catherine,
I still think of you almost every day. I miss your caring warmth and generous smile. You are in my heart now and still guide me along the sometimes difficult path.

I saw Catherine only briefly for five wonderful sessions when I was in crisis 2 yrs. ago. She helped me immmensely and, sadly, more than she will ever know.
Her kindess, guidance and validation made all the difference to me. So terrible to lose her so soon. I kept her phone # in my pocket at all times. - Janet Haskell

Catherine, Your death is a loss to all of us who knew and loved you. Our years together at Ithaca College were wonderful ones. May the next life bring you peace, happiness, light, and Jerry. Good bye my friend. You will always live in my heart.

Catherine, Words will never express how much you meant to me or how much I will miss you and our discussions. I think you knew. You had class, style, and inner and outer beauty. You will always be in my heart and my mind, helping to guide me along my crooked path. I will remember your guiding words. May your beautiful shining spirit find peace.

Catherine my dear it was because of your ecccentricities not despite them that you were my friend and I yours. No we would not make a good team for the Amazing race but you Mere and I did navigate the Mass turnpike well. I will miss you..I will think of you.. In my thoughts you will be sitting back by the fire listening to Jerry read a verse from a poem he is working on. May the sound of his voice ,the smell of his pipe and the crackling of the fire be the back drop of what ever lies next. I know you will be smiling. I'll miss you Catherine. You were not dull, and thats why I liked you

We feel a dreadful sadness at her passing, may she now rest in peace.

For Catherine, who said she felt lucky to be able to see so much beauty in 'ordinary' things.
