Catherine STEVENSON Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Feb. 15 to Feb. 16, 2013.

STEVENSON, Catherine Anne (Bingeman)
Passed away peacefully on February 5, 2013. Catherine (Kit) was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on October 1, 1922. She graduated as a dietician from the University of Manitoba, where she met her future husband John Stevenson on the steps of the biology building. They were married for 61 years. Kit and John moved to Vancouver in 1947 and settled in West Vancouver in 1954. They raised five children. Their home has always been a lively and welcoming place for all. After decades of work with the Anglican Church, Kit was awarded the Order of the Diocese in 2010 for being a "Pioneer for Social Justice and an Advocate for dignity and respect for women." Kit was an active member of the University Women's Club in Vancouver, West Vancouver and North Vancouver. She served on the board of the Vancouver club and subsequently travelled to the 1987 World Conference of Women in Moscow and the 1995 IFUW conference in Japan. She was a proud member of Pi Beta Phi. Kit was known for her energy, warmth, compassion, and love for her family. She was active in community, social, and political affairs and pursued her causes with determination. She enjoyed many carefree summers at the family's Cultus Lake cottage, and created many lasting memories there with family and friends. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Dr. John D. Stevenson, and her brother, Reesor Bingeman. Kit is survived by her five children, Bruce (Janice), Joan Campbell (Al), Barbara, Milt (Jane), and Karen Barnett (Dave); grandchildren, Josh, Erica (Michael), Christy (Patrick), Kimberley (Logan), Julia, Mary, Jennifer (Curtis), Camilla (Ryan), Garth (Annie), Emily (Riley), Janine (Brendan), and Linden (Sarah); great-grandchildren, Scott, Kate, and Lola. Kit is survived by her sister, Betsy (Jack) and sister-in- law Norma. The family would like to thank Home Instead, Lions Gate Hospital 2 East, and Lynn Valley Care Centre for the excellent care they provided, and a special thank you to neighbour Drew. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Foundation, the Down Syndrome Research Foundation, or North Shore Rescue. A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Christopher's Church, 1068 Inglewood Ave., West Vancouver, BC, on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. For those wishing to share a memory of Catherine, please go to

I had the pleasure and the privilege of driving Kit to Hycroft on many occasions, most frequently to the monthly meetings of the Issues Cafe. I have such good memories of the stimulating discussions we had en route. Kit could see the bright side of everything!

Bruce and Family: The service yesterday did your Mother (and Father) proud! I'm sure she laughed with the rest of us at the gentle humour and obvious love you all showed for her and each other. Kit and John have got to be proud! I only wish I'd spent more time with her but Geri and I do have a very special memory of our dinner with her last year. Her passing helps me realize how important our friendship must be in the future. Blessings to you all.
