Sister Catherine Williamson

Sister Catherine Williamson, RSM, a member of the Mid-Atlantic Community of the Sisters of Mercy died Friday, Jan. 19, 2018, at Mercy Center, Dallas.

She was born Aug. 17, 1930, in Wilkes-Barre, and was the daughter of the late William and Ellen Gibbons Kennedy Williamson.

Sister Catherine graduated from Meyers High School and received her degree in social studies from Misericordia University and a master's degree in history from the University of Scranton.

Sister Catherine entered the Sisters of Mercy in Dallas on Sept. 8, 1948, professed her vows on March 12, 1951, and received the religious name of Sister Mary Campion.

Sister taught in the diocesan schools in Scranton, Brooklyn, Altoona, and Johnstown in both elementary and secondary settings. She was principal at St. Joseph School Babylon, New York, and vice principal at Bishop O'Reilly in Kingston.

Upon completing her ministry in education, Sister Catherine interned at St. Peter's in Memphis, Tenn., in housing management which prepared her for a new ministry as housing coordinator for the Sisters of Mercy. Her last and perhaps most satisfying ministry was that of Prayer and Presence at Mercy Center where she remembered all those she met along her journey.

Sister is survived by her nephews, Ronald and Joseph Williamson; her niece, Linda Cranfill; and the Sisters of Mercy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Ellen Gibbons Kennedy and Mary Kennedy Solanick; her brothers, Tom, Joe, James and William.

The celebration of her life will begin at 9 a.m. Friday with a prayer service and visiting until 10:15 a.m. in Mercy Center Chapel, Dallas.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Wilkes-Barre.
