Chantal Claire Hager

March 9, 1992

April 3, 2011

Our beautiful daughter and sister Chantal Claire Hager passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, April 3 at UC Davis Medical Center at the age of 19. She was born to Robert Rene Hager and Elaine Claire Hager in Reno on March 9, 1992. Chantal was a bright, compassionate and wonderful young woman who will be forever missed by her family and friends.

Chantal attended Mt. Rose Elementary School and Coral Academy of Science where she graduated from high school in 2010. As a child, Chantal was full of energy and learned to hold her own with her three older brothers. A natural entertainer, she would stand on the coffee table at the age of three and sing to the music playing on the stereo holding a broom as though it were a microphone. Chantal had a knack for making people smile and always seemed to know when someone in the family was down and needed lifting up. Chantal seemed to make friends with everyone she met, and she loved playing with her friends and having them spend weekends at her home. She would spend endless hours in the pool with her friends during the summer, and in the winter, Chantal and her girlfriends would play dress-up and pile up pillows to jump over as if they were horses. When people spent time with Chantal, they were blessed by the presence of a girl who truly wanted them to have fun with her. Chantal made other people happy.

Chantal loved her horse "Cash", and for years learning to jump her horse was what she enjoyed the most. Chantal enjoyed competing, and she won many hunter-jumper competitions. Her high-spirited Thoroughbred was a perfect match for Chantal given her energy and zest for life.

Although she was the "baby sister", in so many ways Chantal was the soul of the family. Chantal's positive energy and naturally inquisitive nature brought people to life, and her vulnerabilities caused others to reflect upon their own existence. Chantal planned to be a psychologist in order to help others deal with challenges in their lives. Her deep care for others was matched by how deeply her feelings could be hurt, something understood by those who knew her well.

During the last few years, Chantal very much wanted to, but never could, overcome the eating disorder that took her life. In her memory, the law firm of Hager & Hearne has established The "Chantal Claire Hager Charitable Foundation" in order to educate young people and parents about the devastating impact of anorexia and bulimia on families. Contributions can be made at any Wells Fargo branch or online at www.nevadafund.org.

Chantal was predeceased by her Great Grandmother Fern Eleanora Hardy, her Grandmother Yvonne Siard Hager, her Grandfather Edward Hager and her Uncle Brian Hawley. Chantal is survived by her Father Robert Rene Hager (Lisa), Mother Elaine Claire Legras (Jean Pierre), and her brothers Robert Edward Hager, Ian Hager and Ryne Hager and by her Grandmother Laverne Auringer (Ralph) and Grandfather Carl Vincent Hawley.

Viewings will be scheduled for Thursday, April 14, 2011 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm and on Friday, April 15, 2011 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Ross, Burke and Knobel Mortuary, 2155 Kietzke Lane, Reno. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 12 noon at Mt. View Mortuary, 425 Stoker Ave, with internment immediately thereafter at Mountain View Cemetery.

Contributions to the Chantal Claire Hager Charitable Foundation at www.nevadafund.org, in lieu of flowers would be appreciated.

There are so many of us that still think of you every day. I hope you and Bobby are throwing back a cold one, and watching over your family and friends. This place ain't the same without you.

Chantal, the times I met with you and your dad, you seemed sweet and kind and young and vulnerable, like most teenagers, perhaps. But it was clear how much your dad loved you. Here on this side, we don't know what we will find at the end, but the scientists and others who study this sort of thing tell us that the evidence is clear, that we all meet again, and those we lost are only separated from us for a tiny fraction of time. Though the hurt we experience on this side from missing you is real, we know that we will see you again, and experience your same confident smile.

I just Learned of Chantal's passing on April 3rd. I was her dietitian in Reno. I am very sad for Chantal and her family. Chantal had so much passion and life in her it is hard to imagine that she passed away at such a young age. She truly wanted to help other girls recover from eating disorders and would bring books, ideas and websites into the office to discuss them. Having a charitable foundation established for educating others is something Chantal would have wanted. I will miss her very much. My condolences for Chantal's family and friends. This is a huge loss for many people.

When I lived in Reno, many years ago me and you were inseparable. All we did was ride Cash and Lysander all over Maplewood stables, have sleep overs at my house, go to circus circus on the weekends and we just had the best of times. We were 8 days apart, Pisces, exactly the same in every way. We both planned on being physiologist, we were both very sensitive and caring of others. I loved you so much Chantal! You really don't know how great something or someone is until they are gone. But the thing is, I already knew how great you really were. RIP my dear friend

I met Chantal only twice--once when she visited Houston with her dad and again on the occasion of the Divine Strake trial in Las Vegas. I recall her as one of the brave few who ventured out on the swings at the top of the Stratosphere Tower. I remember her as a smart, funny and exceptionally gutsy person--just like her dad.

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?

Thou art more lovely and more temperate.

Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,

And summer's lease hath all too short a date.

Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,

And often is his gold complexion dimmed;

And every fair from fair sometime declines,

By chance, or nature's changing course untrimmed.

But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st;

Nor shall death brag thou wand'rest in his shade,

When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st,

So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,

So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
