Charles Emery Anderson
1925-2014
Our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Charles Emery Anderson, of Orem, passed away on Monday, August 25, 2014, at the Central Utah Veterans Home. Chuck was born in Provo on March 25, 1925, to Guy Fred and Lillie Wiegel Anderson.
Chuck is survived by his three siblings; sister Theda L. Kerbstat, brother Harold L. (Maxine) Anderson and brother Guy A. (Lillian) Anderson; his five children Charles Russell (Karalue) Anderson, Margie (Gary) Points, Janae Jones, Shellee Anderson and Alan Emery (Katherine) Anderson; 23 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren. His wife Helen Stratton Anderson preceded him in death.
Throughout his life, Chuck was an honorable man who dedicated his time and effort to providing for his wife, Helen, and five children. In his early years, Chuck loved to roam the foothills of Y Mountain. He enjoyed the freedom the outdoors provided and exhibited his love for nature in his later years with his award-winning yard.
Chuck and Helen met on a blind date at his high school seminary graduation. He told friends that he had met the girl he would marry. After graduating from Provo High School, Chuck was drafted into the United States Army during the height of World War II and served his country in the European Theatre. Before leaving for Europe, Chuck returned home on furlough and married Helen in the Logan Temple on October 20, 1944. Chuck received a Bronze Star for his heroic actions on the frontlines.
Chuck's varied professional career began at Geneva Steel, after which he partnered with his father-in-law to create S&A Fruit Farms in Orem. In the mid-70s, Chuck began working for Brigham Young University Food Services and retired as the manager of the Missionary Training Center cafeteria. He loved feeding the missionaries and rubbing shoulders with General Authorities. Chuck's coworkers and employees appreciated his kind and affable personality.
As a young father, Chuck served as a counselor in several bishoprics. He later served as bishop of the Orem 2nd Ward and on the Stake High Council. After he retired, Chuck and Helen served two full-time missions. They spent their first mission proselyting, building a chapel and reactivating dozens of members in the Chile Santiago North Mission. They served their second mission in the Santiago Temple, where Chuck was a sealer. After returning home, Chuck and Helen served in the Provo and Mt. Timpanogos Temples. Chuck had the opportunity to seal his youngest son's family and 10 of his grandchildren to their spouses for time and eternity.
Chuck had three great loves in his life: Helen, BYU football and beautiful music. He was admired for his sense of humor, good looks and thick, wavy head of hair. Chuck was a gentleman and devoted husband, never missing the chance to open Helen's door, splurge on a beautiful dress or surprise her with a loving card. Both Chuck and Helen embraced the Gospel and spent their lives striving to be righteous examples to their fellowmen and posterity. Chuck honored his Priesthood and never wavered in his love for the Gospel. It brings his family comfort and joy knowing that Chuck and Helen have been reunited after five years apart.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Perpetual Education Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Please join Chuck's family in honoring his life. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 30, 2014, in the Vermont Chapel located at 430 East 400 North in Orem.
