Charles Arthur Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 6 to Jan. 15, 2023.
Charles "Charlie" Philip Arthur, 89, passed peacefully on December 24, 2022, comforted by his devoted wife Suzanne. He was born on January 25th, 1933, in Ames, Iowa to the late Herbert and Minnie Arthur. He experienced the ideal Midwestern boyhood which included summers in Colorado, and fishing in Minnesota, and was the school photographer at Ames High. He went on to receive his Civil Engineering Degree from Iowa State University. In 1965 he moved his young family to Arizona to accept the position as head of the Transportation Research Team for the City of Phoenix. During Phoenix's explosive growth of the 60's through the 1980's, Charlie and his team contributed to the design of the city's freeway system and terminal expansion at Sky Harbor International Airport. He received recognition for his work on the Piestewa Freeway (State Highway 51). After retirement, he pursued post-career dreams of traveling and living part of each year fishing and hiking in Telluride, Colorado. Charlie was an avid distance runner who participated in many 10K's as well as the Boston, New York, Dallas, and Bay to Breakers Marathons. His many interests included photography, fly fishing, golf, hiking, and sports. Charlie will be greatly missed for his intelligence, kindness, generosity, and sense of humor. In addition to his wife Suzanne, he is survived by his brother Richard Arthur (Kathleen), sons Bruce (Mariesa) and Scott, stepchildren Brian Shearer, Brent Carter, Craig Carter, Dwyn Cooper, and seven grandsons. A private celebration of life is planned for a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's and Related Disorders charity of choice.
