Obituary

Charles Edward Benson, 84, East Grand Forks, Minnesota, died Sunday, June 27, 2004 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, North Dakota. He died with his wife of 66 years, children and grandchildren at his side.
Charles was born on June 8, 1920 in Grand Forks, the son of Isaac and Anna (Leolos) Benson. He attended Sacred Heart High School and then served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1944. Charles married Edna "Toots' Carlson on June 13, 1938. Charles worked for the Great Northern Railroad as a switchman for over 38 years retiring in 1980. Charlie very much enjoyed his many years at the VFW and American Legion Posts where he served as a chaplain and provided military honors for comrades. He found enjoyment with family at the cabin on Cass Lake. Charlie is survived by his wife, Toots; 5 sons: Dick Benson of East Grand Forks, daughter-in-law JoAnn Benson of Grand Forks, North Dakota, John ("Dot') Benson of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, Michael (Nancy) Benson of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Tom (Carla) Benson of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, Major Eric (Winona) Benson of Palmer, Alaska; 5 daughters: Pat (Frank) Swangler of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Pam Suedel of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, Paulette (Richard) Suedel of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Priscilla Benson of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Prudence (David) Nelson of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; 35 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, a sister Frances (Lyle) Eissinger of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, a sister, Ann Ringstad of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother John, sister Mary, grandson T.J. Benson, 3 brother-in-laws, Arnold Ringstad, Jack Coulter and Leo Murray. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 Thursday, July 1, 2004 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church East Grand Forks, Minnesota. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service all at the Sacred Heart Church. Burial: Resurrection Cemetery, East Grand Forks, Minnesota. Military Honors: East Grand Forks VFW Post #3817 & American Legion Post # 157. Arrangements by Stennes Funeral Home, East Grand Forks, Minnesota.

Charles Edward Benson is a husband, a father, a grandpa, and a friend. He is loved and missed by many. I am grateful for the time that we spent together, and I am blessed to know that he will always be my grandpa.
