MIDDLESBORO — Major Ret. Charles Edward "Ed" Bowling, age 84, of Middlesboro, KY, passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2015 in the Middlesboro ARH Hospital. He was the son of the late William Bowling and Chesney Rice Bowling. Mr. Bowling served his country from August 3, 1948 until November 1, 1971 and was a retired Major of the United States Army. He studied and spoke Russian at Language School, worked at Fort Polk, La. from 1962 – 1964 and assignment to Vietnam in December 1964.
He was then assigned from Vietnam to Germany with the Fourth Armored Division as Chief, Personnel Division. He was awarded The Bronze Star for Meritorious Achievement in ground operations against hostile forces in the Republic of Vietnam from December 1964 to December 1965 and The Meritorious Service Medal during the period of January 1970 to October 1971. After his retirement of 24 years service, Mr. Bowling proudly worked with his son, Michael Bowling, until his total retirement in April of 2004.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife and Mother to his children Sieglinde Freudenstein Bowling, his second wife Patricia Welch; Brothers: James Lowell Bowling, Shelby Dean Bowling, William Bowling and Jonathan Bowling.
Mr. Bowling leaves behind his wife: Pamela Davis Bowling; children: Charles Bryan Bowling, Michael Dean Bowling and wife Jamie; Robert Bowling and wife Karla; Robert Wayne Grimm, Benjamin Adam Grimm and wife Rachel; Misty Roben Summers and husband Stevan. Grandchildren: Eric Bowling, Ashley Everly Bowling Kraska and husband Richard, Adam Edward Bowling and wife Becky, Blake Shoffner Bowling, Bradley Bowling and wife Jenna, Brennan Joseph Bowling, Skylar Whitney Lobdell, Michael Roben Lobdell, Michael Aaron Wyatt, Jacob Adam Grimm, Kylee Anne Grimm and Isaac Adam Grimm. Great Grandchildren: Everly Kraska, Ellie Kraska, Harrison Bowling and Blaine Bowling. Only surviving Brother Michael Jan Bowling in addition to numerous other family and friends.
The family of Mr. Bowling will receive friends on Sunday, May 31, 2015 from 1:00pm until 3:00pm at The Covenant United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 3:00pm with Rev. Arthur Trent officiating. Music will be provided by Larry and Karen Blondell. Mr. Bowling will be laid to rest in the McDaniels Cemetery in London, KY immediately following services with Full Military Honors.
Pallbearers will be: Adam Bowling, Blake Bowing, Bradley Bowling, Brennan Bowling, Boone Bowling, Jeff Bowling, Joey Bowling and Jim Bowling.
Family request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Covenant United Methodist Church or CCM (Cooperative Christian Ministries)
