Charles Brockman Obituary

Published by The Macomb Daily from Mar. 6 to Mar. 8, 2015.
Brockman, Charles “Chuck”, age 80, died March 1, 2015 at his home on Harsens Island. He was born May 28, 1934. Mr. Brockman was born and raised in Mount Clemens and worked at the Macomb Daily newspaper in the composing room for 34 years, semi-retiring in 1999, he continued to write the boating column for the paper until 2006. Serving in the Army from 1954-1956 in Munich, Germany he traveled extensively in Europe. An avid lifetime recreational boater, Mr. Brockman cruised to many destinations in the Great Lakes and called Lake St. Clair his home port. Taking delivery of their last boat in New York, they brought it back through the Hudson River and Erie Canal to the Great Lakes treating the cruise as a vacation. Mr. Brockman was the founder and only president of the Save Our South Channel Lights, heading the organizations effort to restore the historically important lighthouses in Lake St. Clair. Memberships in organizations include: Lake St. Clair Save Our South Channel Lights, The Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association, Harsens Island/St. Clair Flats Association, Michigan Lighthouse Alliance, Idle Hour Yacht Club, North Star Sail Club, Great Lakes Maritime Institute, The Detroit Historical Society, Mount Clemens Elks, Nautical Mile Merchants Association and The Old Crowd. Loving a bit of adventure he also liked to fly in large and small planes of every type, including parasailing and sail planes. At the age of 71 Mr. Brockman did a successful tandem sky dive saying it was something he always wanted to do. He was predeceased by his wife of 30 years, Margarite; his father, Harvey; mother, Roma; and sister, Janet Grime. He is survived by a niece and three nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to the Save Our South Channel Lights Organization. Cremation arrangements were entrusted to the Will & Schwartzoff Funeral Home in Mount Clemens and no services will be held. For additional information on contributions to SOS Channel Lights you may call Kathy Brady 586-242-6047 or Gary Strobel 586-698-8957 and Deb Strobel 586-698-8958.

Chuck Brockman's name was always spoken with a certain reverence in our home when I was growing up. My Dad worked with Mr.Brockman at the Macomb Daily and was proud to call him his friend. Dad has passed too, and on his behalf, I felt a sense of responsibility to honor Mr. Brockman's memory.

I did not know Chuck personally. But from reading his obituary I can tell he was outgoing and enjoyed life. I would like to extend my condolence to family and friends. I know he will be greatly missed. May our creator sustain you during this difficult time Psalms 55:22. Also may all your precious memories help ease your pain.
