Rev. Charles M. Curtis, retired United Methodist pastor, was a Kansan by birth and by choice. He was known across the state and throughout the Church as an outstanding speaker and courageous advocate for justice, peace, and joyful life. Charles was born on December 13, 1924, in Belleville, KS, to William and Beulah (Hobson) Curtis as the youngest of four children and the only boy. He spent his early life on the family farm in Republic County and saw himself as the product of a home where a vital faith, good books, and great music were the stuff of life. His three older sisters, Ruth Curtis, Frances Behnke, and Ardith Leslie, often claimed to have spoiled their younger brother-although Charles would beg to differ. Charles graduated from Kansas Wesleyan University (Salina), received his Master of Divinity from Drew University (New Jersey) and in later returned to school to earn a Master of Arts in Evangelism from Scarritt College in Nashville. Education was central to all that he did; he never stopped learning. Ordained in 1954, he pastored United Methodist churches in Berkshire Valley (NJ), Conway Springs, Anthony, West Heights in Wichita, University Church in Wichita, Dodge City, Mount Vernon in Wichita, and Halstead, all in Kansas. He also served as the Hays area UMC District Superintendent. He took part in fifteen New Life, New World, and Key Event Missions for the Board of Discipleship in nine states, Australia, and Fiji. Charles was active in the ecumenical movement at many levels and devoted his life to the Church that he loved, serving as delegate to the Uniting Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1968, as well as to several other General and jurisdictional conferences. In 1985 he was stricken with Guillain Barré and left the active ministry on disability, eventually taking early retirement in 1990. Charles was a social and political advocate against injustice of all sorts. He was a founding director of Valley Hope Alcoholic Treatment Center, served as an organizational member of the Wichita Consumers Utility Rights Board, protested the Vietnam War in his clerical garb, and withstood threats against his family to advocate for fair housing. He was never afraid to stand up and speak his mind to those who needed to hear. While singing in the choir at Kansas Wesleyan University, Charles met his life's love, Betty Jean Feldmann. Their first date was at Niagara Falls, and fall he did. They were married on June 15, 1951, exchanging rings they would each wear for the next 60 years inscribed with the words "We Three." God would bless them with four children, Craig (Susan) Curtis, Marsha (Chuck) Hussung, Brent (Lesley) Curtis, Emalee (Michael) McCafferty. Eight grandchildren would follow, Andrew Curtis, John and William Hussung, Sydney and Graham Curtis, and Cullen, Gavin, and Maureen McCafferty. Charles was a romantic husband, playful and entertaining father and grandfather, poet, theologian, lover of doggerel. He quoted Shakespeare and Ogden Nash, sang Handel and ditties. He was never satisfied with the original words of anything and could "improve" any song off the cuff. Charles gave Betty an orchid corsage for every occasion and once surprised her on her birthday with a spontaneous performance by the Capital Quartet. She wears unique and beautiful jewelry that Charles could never resist. He loved new places, interesting people, unusual experiences, and he and Betty traveled widely and often. While he eventually needed a wheelchair to navigate the world, he never allowed it to diminish his love of life. Charles passed peacefully from this life to the next on January 3, 2012, at home. He leaves behind a loving wife, children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews, cousins, and many brothers and sisters in Christ. We in the family will always think of him looking ahead. He once said, "Affirming that the Christian life and ordination in the Church is for life, in both purpose and in time, I consider myself as a futurist as only a Christian can. I look forward to much adventure in growth and grace in the years ahead." Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, to be a light to lighten the nations, and to be the glory of thy people, Israel. Nunc dimittis, Luke 2:29-32

Dear Betty, I am visiting my daughter, Kay, over Thanksgiving and just discovered that Charles died almost a year ago. I am sorry I didn't discover this sooner. My husband, Mac, has been gone almost 16 years. You are a strong woman and are making a good life for yourself, I am sure. My sympathy and love, Marcia McKenney [email protected]

God blessed us, when He sent Rev. & Mrs. Curtis to Conway Springs. What a wonderful influence Rev. Curtis had on my whole immediate family, & me personally. He even got all 5 of us in the choir, & guided us teens to be active in our youth group, with him at our side the whole way.
Ever gving of himself, even in ill health,he had my Dad's memorial service, when Mom asked him.
Visiting our home, it amazed me how he could drum his fingers on the carpet, while sitting in an easy chair!
Rev. Curtis was a Giant of a Man, in many ways. I'm so thankful God chose him as our spiritual leader. Rev. Curtis carried God in his heart & a twinkle in his eye!
God be with you, Mrs. Curtis, & your wonderful family, & God Bless the memory of our Dear Rev. Charles Curtis.

Betty and the entire Curtis Family,
My family's condolences to you and yours. We all have lost one of the "good guys" of the world.
I was a teenager at the United Methodist Church in Conway Springs when you arrived. I will always remember his outstanding sermons, the trips he took us on and playing basketball with this tall, fun-loving man...not your ordinary Preacher, by a long shot. My mother, Nina, played piano on Sundays and his bass voice rang out above the choir during the hymns.I remember following his exploits into the protest movement and hearing of him wearing a long black duster in the protest lines. That was Rev. Curtis. He married my wife and I in 1972 at University Methodist, even changing the ceremony a bit to accomodate my wife's German Catholic relatives. I ran into him at Dillons over the years and we always had long chats. I will miss this man of the people. I just hope God is ready for this unique man.
God Bless

I'll always remember his great stature, his sense of humor, and his wisdom. Most of all I recall the final words he gave me in the charge when I became an Eagle Scout many years ago:
"'God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die, but have eternal life.' Accept and live that love, and you will take the wings of the morning and fly where even eagles cannot go, to eternal life."
Have a great flight, Rev. Curtis.

uncle charles did bring much joy to all who knew him .... on his 80th birthday he wore a t-shirt -- front read "welcome to the over the hill gang!" backside read: "hill? what hill? i don't remember any hill!"
He also kept in his wallet a little slip of paper & anyone who's ever had a beard and shaved it off will enjoy: " upon shaving off one's beard"
by john updike

"the scissors cut the long-grown hair;
the razor scrapes the remnant fuzz,
small-jawed, weak-chinned, big-eyed, i stare
at the forgotten boy i was."

yes he was a larger than life uncle - i looked up to him and that will never change! blessed be his memory!

much love,

I experienced Charles Curtis as a man of deep faith and a light heart, who loved life with a passionate intensity. He used to tell how tall he was by saying that he was 5' 20". I enjoyed the warmth of his smile and the tone of his gentle laugh. He was blessed, and he in turn blessed others. Rest in peace.

I never knew or met Reverend Curtis personally. I would like the family to know that he has had an effect on a number of young men in the Saint Louis area. In 1983, he wrote and delivered the Eagle Charge for one of my best friends, Kevin Nikkel, when Kevin was a member of Rev. Curtis' church. An Eagle Charge 'charges' the Eagle Scout with the lifelong responsibilities of being an Eagle. It is a big deal. In 2008, when my son had his Eagle Ceremony, he asked Kevin to deliver his Eagle Charge. Kevin pulled out the one from his youth, the one that Rev. Curtis gave him 25 years earlier and asked if it would be OK to use it. After reading those compelling words, my son and I quickly agreed that it was exactly what he wanted in a Charge. Kevin personalized it a bit for my son and delivered it at Peter's Court of Honor. There were over a hundred people at that Court of Honor including more that 40 younger Scouts. Since that day, Rev. Curtis' words have been used numerous times to charge Scouts with their lifelong Eagle responsibilities. It is the most requested 'Charge' among the several Troops that I work with. In your sorrow, please know that Rev. Curtis has had and will continue to have a positive influence in creating young men of character.
