Charles Cyr Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 10, 2023.
Charles 'Charlie' Zoel Cyr was born on February 17, 1955 in Edmundston, New Brunswick, Canada to Hilda D. Albert and Zoel P. Cyr. He grew up in Madawaska, Maine. Growing up he was a figure skater and competed in Single Skating along with competing on the high school ski team and tennis team. While attending college at the University of Maine, Orono, he was a member of the marching band.

After graduating from University, he went to Central Maine Medical Center (CMMC) in Lewiston, Maine where he completed his degree in radiology technology. He then moved to Cooperstown, New York where he worked at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital as a Radiology Technologist. In April of 1980, after seeing an ad in the paper, he and a friend decided they would move to Palm Desert, California to work at Eisenhower Medical Center. While working at Eisenhower, he met Jolene, and the rest is history. Charlie and Jolene married on February 14, 1981.

Charlie worked at Eisenhower for 40 years working in various capacities including special imaging, OR assistance, Practice Administrator, and Medical Researcher. He was able to combine his passion of Figure Skating and medicine and became an International Skating Union (ISU) judge for Single Skating, Pair Skating and Ice Dance, a Referee, Data & Replay operator, and a Technical Controller. He judged Ice Dance at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver and served as a Team Leader for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City for U.S. Figure Skating. He also contributed to the creation of the ISU Judging System. In 2014, Charlie was appointed ISU Sports Technical Director Figure Skating and contributed significantly to the development of Figure Skating in this capacity until March of 2023.

I was one of the lucky employees to have Charlie as my supervisor until I left Desert Orthopedic Center in 2006. There is a saying by Dr. Seuss that says "don't be sorry it's over, just be happy it happened". I am very happy Charlie "happened". There are so many of us that knew Charlie on different levels such as coach, supervisor, skating judge and friend, but the luckiest are the ones that got to call him husband, dad, grandpa, brother, son, etc. My daily thoughts and prayers go out to the Jolene, Ashley and Allison and all the rest of the family.

Allen and his family and I send our love , compassion and support to Jolene , Ashley (Sam), Sadie, Rhett and Allison and Miska at this very painful loss of the most wonderful human being ever, Allen was so honored when Charlie said " Yes " to becoming his Confirmation sponsor.
Both of us will forever be indebted to Charlie for his extreme kindness and compassion when Allen was in an ice skating accident and ended up with an injury that required him to be seen by an orthopedic surgeon at Desert Orthopedic Center and because Allen was 17 and I was out of the country and even with his GF's Mother with him the staff said he could not be seen which apparently created a fuss , fortunately for Allen at that moment Charlie overheard the commotion came out of his office and when told what was going on he said " I know Allen and then said " here is my credit card to the staff I will take care of everything ", I was notified, because of Charlie Allen was seen by the surgeon had surgery soon afterwards which was successful, when I took Allen for his post op follow up with the Surgeon I told the staff that
" Everybody needs a Charlie in their lives ".
Charlie rest in peace Dear Friend. You are so loved and will forever be missed including that million dollar smile.
