Charles Howard Empey

Charles "Chuck" Empey, 94, the ultimate family man whose kindness touched many lives, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2025 in San Diego, California. Chuck's adventurous spirit and calm demeanor left an indelible mark on all who were lucky enough to know him. Born in Ogden, Utah to parents Elnora and Charles Empey, Chuck grew up with rugged mountain landscapes as his playground. He graduated from Weber High School and attended the University of Utah where he earned a master's degree in electrical engineering. Chuck combined his brilliant intellect with a passion for the outdoors, which led him on work trips to remote Alaskan islands and the Middle East, where he contributed to pioneering work in the field of satellite reconnaissance in support of national security, and Europe where he was an honorary member of the Austrian ski patrol. He was a proud captain in the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1960.

Chuck married the love of his life, Linda Ottley, on June 16, 1970 in Oakland, California. Together they raised a close family of one son and three daughters, who shared many memorable experiences together fishing, water skiing, snow skiing, and golfing. He loved sharing the beauties of nature with his kids and grandkids. Chuck was a faithful member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in many stake and ward leadership callings.

Chuck is survived by his wife of 55 years, Linda; daughters Cara (Cory), Megan (Jason), and Lindsay (Doug); 11 grandchildren who he cherished; and his loyal companion golden retriever, Daisy. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings and his son Matt, who he enjoyed many grand adventures with. His family and friends will forever carry his kind, can-do spirit in their hearts. Every interaction with Chuck was a reminder of the power of simple kindness. He had a rare gift for making everyone feel like they could conquer their own mountains. In his memory, his family encourages everyone to enjoy exploring the great outdoors or share a heartfelt act of kindness with a neighbor or stranger.

A graveside dedication in his honor will be held at Madronia Cemetery in Saratoga, California.
