Charles H. Emrick

Charles Hays Emrick, age 82, passed away at his home in Troutdale, Oregon on Tuesday June 27, 2017. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Sandy. The cause of death was failing health.

He was born July 12, 1934 in Oakland, California, to Lynn and Fern Emrick. Chuck attended schools in the Eugene area and graduated from North Eugene High in 1952. After that he served in the US Army until 1956.

On March 20, 1954 he married Audrey Krough. He worked in Seattle at Boeing Aircraft until deciding to move to Eugene, Oregon to attend the University of Oregon where he earned a Bachelors of Arts degree. His first teaching job was in Junction City, Oregon. Because he loved unique opportunities and a challenge, Chuck went to Astoria, Oregon to work at the Tongue Point Job Corps center. After two years he moved his family to Vancouver, Washington to teach at several middle schools, including Shumway, McLoughlin and Lewis until 1977. In 1971. He earned his Master's Degree at Portland State University.

In 1979 he married Sandra Schleich Grimes. For the last 40 years he and Sandy have owned Concept Construction, Inc in Troutdale, Oregon. Chuck retired in 2009.

Chuck loved his family and friends dearly. His favorite things to do, especially later in life were RVing to places all around the northwest, as well as, wine tasting along the way! Any and all things having to do with the, " DUCKS" took precedence on game days. Homer, his furry friend, was always at his side. During his teaching career and summer work camps he impacted thousands of kids in positive and dramatic ways. In his construction company, he used his crafts and talents to showcase some of the most beautiful homes in the Portland area.

Survivors include his six children; Michele Wolf (Medford), John Emrick (Vancouver), Brian Emrick (Clatskanie), Rod Emrick (Troutdale), Christopher Scott Grimes (Lake Oswego), Jennifer Steinman (Troutdale), 12 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, as well as, many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mom and dad and brother, Lynn.

Services will be held at 2:00 on Wednesday, July 5th at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home in Gresham on 520 W Powell BLVD. Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mt. Scott BLVD at 9:30 am on Thursday, July 6th with full military honors. Relatives and friends are welcome to attend both ceremonies.

Thanks to the staff at Kaiser Permanente, Sunnyside Hospital and the wonderful hospice staff that helped make him comfortable in his final days.
