Charles Goldberg Obituary

Published by Philadelphia Inquirer/Philadelphia Daily News from Apr. 9 to Apr. 14, 2009.
Charles Goldberg, 87, of Wynnewood, chairman of I. Goldberg, the venerable Army-Navy store on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, died of a heart attack yesterday at Bryn Mawr Terrace. For more than 50 years, Mr. Goldberg presided over three floors of merchandise that at any given time included Norwegian helmets, World War II Soviet overcoats, bobblehead Marines, Royal Air Force bush jackets, German army nightshirts, and gas masks - as well as practical rain ponchos and camping gear.

All of us at M&G are deeply saddened to hear of the loss of our friend and business associate, Charlie Goldberg.

My grandfather, my father, my brother and I, we all knew and respected dear Charlie. He was among the last of a great and original generation of surplus dealers, and will remain a legend amongst his peers.

He will be greatly missed.

Nana,

I want to offer my sincerest condolences. I just heard of Mr. Goldberg's passing. Though in my time at I. Goldberg I worked with him sparingly, he always provided insight and a good story whenever we'd converse. I know he will be missed.

My brother, Harry Friel worked for Charlie for many years at I. Goldberg. Charlie played an important role in Harry's life as a mentor and teacher. My brother loved Charlie.
When Harry died, Charlie wrote a wonderful piece in the Phila. Inquirer about him and his years as a employee with I. Goldberg. Thank you Charlie.
Our condolences to the Goldberg family for the loss of such a kind and wonderful man.

To Nana & Family,
I called the store today & asked for Charlie as it has been awhile since we spoke. I live in the Chicago area & had no idea of his passing. I was deeply saddened to hear this. I have been in the surplus industry for 26 years. I never have heard anyone in this industry, foreign or domestic, who didn't have the highest regards for him. He without a doubt was a SURPLUS ICON & WORLD CLASS GUY. He will be missed by all that knew him.

The past few years I had the privilege of cutting Charles Goldberg's hair. He was an outstanding client--respectful and extremely considerate. If he missed an appointment he give me extra money, if I shaved a few spots he'd missed on his beard he gave me extra money. We had numerous heart to heart conversations which I will always treasure. When he was in a few weeks ago I could tell he wasn't himself and we cried together as we hugged good bye. I'll miss him. So sorry for our loss of such a remarkable man.

My condolences,

To Nana and family,

I have been coming into the store since 1982 and have never looked back. Many stores call themselves 'army and navy stores', but none have the things I can always count on being there. The name I. Goldberg has always been a part of my route while in town.

I am sorry for your loss. Ed (the bugler).

Im going to miss Mr.G. We started out 2004 as me being an employee and him my boss, over time we became friends. He taught me everthing I know about military surplus. I worked with him in the basement of I.goldberg in surplus and I still do. He loved his surplus and the customers that came to buy it.I'm go to miss his advice, him telling jokes, him coming in asking what we got going/whats doing. He always told me "give the customer the buy and they'll talk about you" I can sum Mr. Goldberg in one sentence(A BILLIANT MAN WHO GRACED MY LIFETIME WITH HIS PRESENCE).

To the Goldberg Family- My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My father Jack Plevinsky was the manager at I.Goldberg for over 40 years. I worked there from the age of 14 years until I finished college. Charlie taught me alot about life and business. He had a postive impact on my business career. It was a pleasure and an honor to have worked for him and to have known him for over 50 years.

To Nana and all those in the I Goldberg family,

We at Rothco all lost a dear friend yesterday. Over the last 20 years I've had the privilege to talk to Charlie many times and I learned so much from just speaking to him. He was a brilliant businessman and a true mensch and he will be missed. Howard and Milton Somberg both send their condolences as well as do the whole Rothco family. You all will be in our prayers this holiday season.

I wrote a little tribute to Charlie in our blog at http://rothco.blogspot.com/

My dad bought me a pair of boots in 1960. They had a rubber bottom and high leather to just below the knee. I was a 12 year old Boy Scout. They were surplus but they cost $4.00.
Now in my 61st year, in Atlanta when a rare snow hits, I go out to the garage and put on the same pair of winter boots. I don't know that we ever made a better investment.
And like another has said, you could always just drop in and get new, surplus, etc. I don't personally know Charles, but I don't doubt that "he showed me some stuff" over the years. Thinking about it still makes me smile.
Thanks, you are remembered well.

I met Mr. Goldberg in 1977 when I began my employment with I Goldberg. Over the years I worked very closely with him. We did not always see eye to eye, however he taught me valuable lessons about life. Hard work, dedication and loyalty being just a few. His skills as a retailer were both unique and unparalleled. He was a great teacher, I learned everything I know about retail from him. Now in my thirty second year as an employee of I Goldberg I am dedicated to the continued success of the business he loved so much. I will miss him. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I worked side by side with Mr. Goldberg for twenty years. I learned many things about life and business from him. He treated me like son. He trusted my business decisions, and we had a common bond, buying and selling. He loved his merchandise, and was a visionary. He understood trends before they started. People loved him because he was genuine.
My condolences to Mrs. Goldberg, Nana, Carl, Leonard, Elise,
Grandchildren and staff.

To Nana and all the family,

So sorry for your loss.

I am so grateful that you both kept the business alive even though you were forced to relocate. Your store has been a touchstone in my life as I raised my daughter in Philadelphia.

April 9, 2009

Born in Philly, we moved to the suburbs when I was eight. Around age 11 or 12, hopping in the train and sneaking back into town with my friends to go to I. Goldberg became a monthly event.

Moved away after school, traveled extensively, and on my return to Philly for a career move just three weeks ago, the fact that Mr Goldberg's store was still open and apparently thriving was a real emotional touchstone for me.

My condolences to the family, and my thanks to Mr. Goldberg.
